Cobra.tv interviewde Charlotte Vanden Eynde in de Domzaal van Vooruit over haar nieuwste voorstelling I’m Sorry I’m Sorry It’s (Not) A Story. Sinds 29 januari beschikbaar via Cobra.be, een nieuwe themasite en dé cultuurhotspot van de VRT.

The game is up! is naar jaarlijkse gewoonte een platform voor een aantal internationale podiumkunstenaars die er hun werk voor het eerst in België presenteren. Om te beginnen is er de wereldpremière van W.M.D. (just the low points), de nieuwe voorstelling van Sponsored by Nobody. (zie fragment making of:)

Vooruit en het Filmfestival Gent presenteren met trots de derde Almost Cinema. Van 7 tot 18 oktober slingert er zich opnieuw een installatieparcours door Vooruit (tot in de ex-snoepwinkel vlak naast Vooruit), tonen we een reeks performances die schuren langs cinema en staan er concerten, talks en een symposium (‘mutating media’) op het programma.

Vooruit and the Ghent Film Festival proudly present the third edition of Almost Cinema! From the 7th to the 18th of October you can explore the installation trail making its way through the Vooruit building (and into the former candy shop next to Vooruit), enjoy performances indebted to cinema and concerts, talks and a conference (‘mutating media’).

Deepblue is de naam van het kunstenaarstrio Heine R. Avdal, Christoph De Boeck en Yukiko Shinozaki. Vaak werken ze elk apart aan projecten, maar zo nu en dan slaan ze de handen in elkaar en komen ze naar buiten met een collectief stuk. De laatste keer dat ze samenwerkten was in 2003 met Closer. Die voorstelling ging in Vooruit in première en kende nadien een succesvolle internationale tournee. Nu presenteert het trio een nieuw stuk, dat ook in Vooruit in première gaat: You are here, van 22 t/m 24 mei 2008 te zien in onze Domzaal.

Although they often work on projects individually, every now and again they join forces to produce a collective work. The last time they worked together was in 2003 with Closer. The exhibition premièred in Vooruit before embarking on a successful international tour. Now the trio are presenting a new piece, which will also première in Vooruit: You are here, on show from 22 to 24 May in our Dom Hall.

De Portugese theatermaakster Patricia Portela is steeds te vinden voor vreemdsoortige maar plezierige projecten. In 2006 toonde ze tijdens het ‘Say it Now’ festival voor het eerst de volledige trilogie Flatland. Toen werd het publiek door een aandachtszieke James Bond-figuur gekidnapt. Nu gooit Portela het over een andere boeg. Sinds 23 oktober werkt ze in Vooruit aan haar nieuwe voorstelling Banquet – een performance, luisterspel en filosofisch banket in één. Banquet gaat op 20 november in première en is nog tot zaterdag 24 november te zien in de Balzaal van Vooruit.

Portuguese dramaturge Patricia Portela is always in for odd yet entertaining projects. At the Say it Now festival in 2006, she showed the entire Flatland trilogy for the first time, during which the audience was kidnapped by an attention-craving Bond-like figure. For her new project, Portela takes an entirely different approach. Since the 23rd of October she’s been in Vooruit to rehearse Banquet, a performance, audio drama and philosophical banquet all in one. Banquet premières on the 20th of November, and will run in Vooruit’s Balzaal until Saturday the 24th of November.

Op vrijdag 16 november gaat de nieuwe voorstelling van beeldend kunstenaar / theatermaker Kris Verdonck in première. Met een knipoog erbij belooft Kris dat het een ‘wereldhit’ zal worden. Het is in elk geval zo dat Verdonck en zijn kompanen nog intensief verderwerken om I/II/III/IIII te voltooien. De voorstelling is (zoals steeds bij Verdonck) erg beeldend.

Friday the 16th of November will see the premiere of artist / director Kris Verdonck’s new show. He’s already jokingly said that the show will be “a world-wide hit”. However, Verdonck and his crew are indeed working hard to improve I/II/III/IIII, a show which will be very expressive, like all of Verdonck’s previous work.

Johan Huizinga schreef destijds in zijn boek “Homo Ludens” dat alle beschaving geboren wordt op de grens tussen scherts en ernst. Daarmee gaf hij aan dat de spelende mens meer zoekt dan enkel vertier. Het spel wordt in onze maatschappij niet serieus genomen. Aan de ene kant kan de maatschappij niet zonder spelregels, anders wordt het een anarchie. Anderzijds, zonder speelruimte, verwordt de maatschappij tot een dictatuur van wet is wet en regel is regel. In zo’n samenleving wordt het spel opeens een schadeloos spelletje waarin verder niks op het spel staat. Televisieamusement. In beide gevallen wordt dus het spel niet serieus genomen. Het spel serieus nemen betekent dat je je onderwerpt aan bepaalde regels in een bepaalde context, en daarbinnen heb je volledige vrijheid. Momenteel zijn Eva De Groote en ikzelf druk in de weer met de finalisering van het Vooruit-festival ‘the game is up!’. Het is precies de analyse die Huizinga hierboven schetst, die in ‘the game is up!’ centraal staat.
