Vrijdag 2 april geven we het startschot van Electrified 02 – Hacking Public Space in het S.M.A.K.. Startschot is in deze het juiste woord want de opening is slechts het begin van het traject. Hacking Public Space loopt tot en met 13 juni en in die periode zullen er acties plaatsvinden in de stad die gaandeweg (via videodocumentatie of op een andere manier) worden bijgeplaatst in het museum. Er is ook een flashback naar opgemerkte acties van kunstenaars in de afgelopen decennia, daarover volgt er een lezingenavond in Vooruit op 2 juni. Op 9 mei blazen we verzamelen in Gent-Zeehaven voor een speciale geluidsperformance (locatie: Langerbruggekaai 40, 9042 Gent)

Friday the 2nd April sees the kick-off of Electrified 02 – Hacking Public Space. And the opening is just the beginning of an exciting journey! Hacking Public Space will run until the 13th of June. During this period, events will take place in the city and will gradually fill up the exhibition – in the form of videos, etc. There will also be a flashback to the past, with an evening of presentations on this theme on the 2nd of June. On the 2nd of May, there will be a special sound performance in the Port of Ghent. (Check out the pictures of the site visit.)

Electrified is de noemer waaronder Vooruit en S.M.A.K. om de twee jaar een gezamelijk project op poten zetten. Bij de opstart in 2008 (toen een samenwerking tussen Vooruit, SMAK en 5voor12) stonden een aantal geluidskunstenaars in de aandacht, met installaties van Ronald Kuivila en Edwin van der Heide en live performances van onder andere Rikkert Brok en Maarten Halmans. De tweede editie van Electrified focust niet op één specifiek veld in de kunsten maar gaat net op het kruispunt van een aantal sporen binnen de visuele kunst staan. Tegelijk is het een onderzoek naar de fricties tussen de gebieden waarin de betrokken huizen functioneren: beeldende kunst enerzijds, mediakunst, geluids- en performance kunst anderzijds.

Electrified is the name under which Vooruit and the S.M.A.K. mount this biennial project. In 2008 it highlighted a number of sound artists including Richard Kuivila, Edwin van de Heide, Rikkert Brok and Maarten Halmans. This second edition is taking up a decisive position on the crossroads of several directions in the visual arts. At the same time it will expose the friction between the areas where the two institutions operate: the S.M.A.K. in contemporary art and the Vooruit in media art, sound and performance art.

Time 2009 is het negende en laatste Time Festival. Curatoren-kunstenaars Dirk Braeckman en Els Dietvorst maakten er een statement van: Time 2009 is een boek, veeleer een denkplek dan een evenement. Hun initiatief wil meer tijd géven dan nemen. Op 13 november zal Time is a book voor het eerst aan het publiek getoond worden. Dit gebeurt met een feestelijke book launch in de Bank van de Arbeid (Volderstraat 1, Gent). Vanaf die datum maak je ook kennis met (facetten van) het boek in de “time circles”. Vooruit is zo’n time circle, met een tentoonstelling van Nikolaus Gangsterer in het Bespreekbureau.

Time 2009 is the ninth and last edition of Time Festival and above all, a statement by the curators Dirk Braeckman and Els Dietvorst. Time 2009 is a book. A place to think rather than an event. In the rat race of life, this edition of the festival wants to give more time rather than taking it. On the 13th of November the Timebook will be launched wit an official book launch at the Bank van de Arbeid (Volderstraat 1, 9000 Ghent at 8:00 p.m.). The Timebook will spread out over the city of Ghent in ‘Time Circles’, an initiative in which a number of like-minded organizations use Time is a book as a source of inspiration. Vooruit is one of the time circles, with an exhibition by Nikolaus Gansterer in its box office.

Courtisane is terug met het jaarlijkse festival voor (korte) film, video en mediakunst, na enkele kleinere activiteiten op verschillende locaties in binnen- en buitenland, o.m. in Vooruit: Without a trace – Erase/delete met een live performance door Pierre Hébert (CA).

Courtisane is back with its annual festival for (short) film, video and media art, after a few smaller events on several locations in Belgium and abroad, including Without a trace – Erase/delete with a live performance by Pierrre Hébert (CA) at Vooruit.

Het festival opent feestelijk op donderdag 23 april om 18u in de Bank van de Arbeid (Voldersstraat), waar de tentoonstelling A Simple Truth loopt. Aki Onda (JP) brengt er zijn 4 uur durende geluidsperformance ‘Cassette Memories’ als brug naar een goedgevulde avond met live performances in Vooruit: An evening on… memory – Past Imperfect.

The festive opening of the festival will take place on Thursday the 23rd of April, 6 p.m. in the Bank van de Arbeid (Voldersstraat), where you can see the exhibition A Simple Truth. Aki Onda (JP) will perform his four-hour sound performance ‘Cassette Memories’ which will be followed by an evening full of live performances at Vooruit: An evening on…memory – Past Imperfect.

Journaliste Emilie Lachaert was erbij en publiceerde een leuk verslag in het weekendmagazine van van Het Nieuwsblad van 24 januari. Ze was vooral onder de indruk van de “head swap” waarop Crew/Eric Joris de girl geeks tracteerde…

During the last edition of Almost Cinema (Oct 2008) Vooruit opened its doors to a Girl Geek Dinner. Journalist Emilie Lachaert also attended the event and published an entertaining piece about it in the January 24 edition the weekend magazine of Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. She was particularly impressed with the “head swap” presented to the girl geeks by Crew/Eric Joris.

De stad vormde al vaker het actieterrein voor bepaalde kunstenaars op het programma van Vooruit, dat zal ook met deze the game is up! het geval zijn. Nogal wat kunstenaars houden ervan om hun werk expliciet buiten museale muren of zalen te houden en het letterlijk midden in de stad, in de samenleving te brengen. Wij trachten erop in te spelen door hen te ondersteunen in hun stedelijke avonturen en die vooral goed te documenteren! Van een tochtje op fietsen uit auto-onderdelen gemaakt, over guerilla gardening en reverse graffiti (aka ‘clean tagging’) tot een stoet voor fanfare en vuilniskar...

The city has already been the backdrop for several artists performing at Vooruit, and we’ll continue this tradition at the game is up. Many artists like to show their work outside the context of a museum or arts centre and transport it to the streets, right into the heart of society. We try to accommodate them by supporting them on their urban adventures and document these interventions as well as we can. From a bike ride on bikes made from car parts to guerrilla gardening and reverse graffiti (a.k.a. clean tagging) to a parade with a brass band and a dustcart…

Oktober stond in het teken van de derde editie van Almost Cinema. De samenwerking met het Filmfestival Gent bestaat al langer maar sinds we Almost Cinema lanceerden, komen we met een duidelijker geprofileerd programma naar buiten. Basisidee is om kunstenaars te presenteren die niet of niet in de eerste plaats filmmaker zijn, maar die hun roots hebben in mediakunst, muziek en podiumkunst en van daaruit werk formuleren dat gerelateerd is met film of de cinemawereld.

In October, Vooruit hosted the third edition of Almost Cinema. We have been working with the Ghent Film Festival for longer, but since we launched Almost Cinema, the programme has a clear profile. The basic idea is to present artists who are not, or not primarily, filmmakers, but who have their roots in media art, music, theatre and dance, and formulate work that is related to film or the world of cinema from this perspective.

Samen met het S.M.A.K. en 10 Days Off daagt Vooruit de zomer uit met een nieuw kunstzinnig evenement: Electrified. Beeldende kunst, geluidskunst en elektronische muziek zijn de voornaamste ingrediënten. Van 18 juli t/m 21 september 2008 loopt Electrified in en rond het S.M.A.K., met een gratis tentoonstelling met werk van Ronald Kuivila en Edwin van der Heide.

The S.M.A.K., 10 Days Off, and Vooruit present Electrified, a summer event mixing visual art, sound art and electronic music. From 18 June to 21 September you will be able to visit a free exhibition in the SMAK featuring work by Ronald Kuivila and Edwin van der Heide.

Tijdens het seizoen 2007-2008 organiseren Vlaams Theater Instituut (VTi) en Cultuur Lokaal een reeks informele gesprekken met programmatoren van werkplaatsen, cultuur- en kunstencentra. Die ontmoetingen zijn erop gericht de keten van programmeren (van werkplaatsen over kunstencentra tot cultuurcentra) beter te oliën. De volgende sessie vindt plaats in Vooruit op 14 februari 2008 en gaat dieper in op het programmeren van en communiceren over ‘hybride’ voorstellingen en cross-overs tussen beeldende, podiumkunst, technologie,...

December 06 stond in het teken van Istanbul Ekspres, een festival met focus op Turkse muzikanten. Het was een mooie gelegenheid om vanuit Fricties, platform voor mediakunst in Vooruit, Basak Senova uit te nodigen, oprichtster van het platform Nomad en freelance curator gebaseerd in Istanbul. In december 07 staan we klaar voor een invasie van Finse muzikanten met de tweede editie van Etoiles Polaires. Ook dit keer lag er een mooie kans om samen te werken met een jong en opmerkelijk curator uit de mediakunst.

In December 06 we welcomed Istanbul Ekspres, a festival focusing on Turkish musicians. It was a great opportunity for the Media Arts platform in Vooruit to invite Basek Senova, founder of the Nomad platform and freelance curator based in Istanbul. In December 07, Vooruit will be invaded by Finnish musicians during the second edition of Etoiles Polaires. We thought this was another great opportunity to work with a young and remarkable media arts curator.
