Vooruit-exe

Op woensdag 18 november kan het publiek van Vooruit kennismaken met een nieuwe, interactieve manier om informatie te consulteren en uit te wisselen: de multitouch multimedia tafel. Anders dan het ingeburgerde touchscreen (aanraakscherm), laat multitouch schermtechnologie een gebruiker toe om verschillende punten tegelijk aan te raken en digitale media intuïtief te bekijken en te manipuleren. Of verschillende gebruikers om samen op één scherm te werken.

On Wednesday the 18th of November, the Vooruit audience can get acquainted with a new, interactive way of consulting and exchanging information: the multi-touch multimedia tablet. Other than the widespread touchscreen, multi-touch screen technology allows the user to touch the screen in several places and manipulate digital media intuitively. On top of that, the screen can also be used by several users at once.

Op 30 september 2009 is door de Stad Gent, de Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, de Universiteit Gent en het IBBT (Interdisciplinair Instituut voor Breedbandtechnologie) de CVBA met een sociaal oogmerk Waalse Krook opgericht. Die vennootschap zal optreden als bouwheer voor het nieuwbouwproject dat gepland is op de Waalse Krook site, naast Vooruit. Tegen midden 2010 wil de CVBA samen met de Vlaams Bouwmeester een architect selecteren die dat nieuwbouwproject zal ontwerpen en een visie zal ontwikkelen voor de hele site. Met de oprichting van de CVBA Waalse Krook is dan ook een belangrijke stap gezet in de realisatie van een nieuwe multimediale site in het hart van Gent.

On September 30 2009, the City of Ghent, Ghent University and the IBBT (Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology) established the CVBA (Cooperative Limited Liability Company) Waalse Krook. The company will act as the project manager for the building project on the site of the Waalse Krook adjacent to Vooruit. By mid-2010, the CVBA and the Flemish Government Architect will choose an architect to develop a vision for the site as well as design the building project itself. The establishment of the CVBA Waalse Krook is therefore a hugely important step in the development of a new multimedia site in the centre of Ghent.

PressTo: Vooruit Café laat je niet op je honger zitten luidde een Vooruit.EXE-post van 29 september 2008 over de PressTo pagers, de kleine doosjes die zijn uitgerust met draadloze technologie om klanten van het Vooruit Café te signaleren dat hun bestelde schotels klaarstaan op de toog.

PressTo: Never go hungry again in the Vooruit Café was the title of an September 29 2008 EXE post about the PressTo pagers, the small boxes equipped with wireless technology to alert customers in the Vooruit Café that their food is ready at the counter.

In Vooruit wordt sinds de succesvolle introductie van de PressTo prototypes gedroomd over de verdere ontwikkeling van dat concept. Nu heeft Vooruit een team samengesteld van creatieve ondernemers (binnen en buiten Vooruit) dat zal nagaan of (en hoe) het concept kan worden vermarkt. Dat team is geselecteerd om deel te nemen aan een iBoot camp van het IBBT in het voorjaar 2009 – een uitgelezen kans op constructieve feedback en handige contacten in de bedrijfswereld!

Since the successful introduction of the prototypes, the Vooruit team has been dreaming about the further development of the concept. Now Vooruit has assembled a team of creative entrepreneurs (from in and outside Vooruit) who will study if and how the concept can be introduced on the market. This team has been selected to take part in an iBoot camp by IBBT in the spring of 2009 – the perfect opportunity to get constructive feedback and make new professional contacts.

Sinds begin september is het Vooruit café uitgerust met (prototypes van) PressTo pagers: kleine doosjes die zijn uitgerust met draadloze technologie om je te signaleren dat je bestelde schotels klaarstaan op de toog. Zo hoeft niemand nog ongeduldig bij de toog op zijn bestelling te wachten. En PressTo blijkt niet alleen een handig ding voor onze cafébezoekers, maar ook voor onze barmedewerkers: dankzij PressTo kunnen ze piekmomenten merkbaar vlotter de baas.

Since early September our Café has been equipped with prototype PressTo pagers: little boxes with wireless technology that notify you when your food is ready to be picked up at the counter. That way, nobody ever has to wait impatiently at the counter again. Not only is PressTo convenient for our visitors, it also helps our bar staff to keep on top of things at busy times.

Vooruit engageert zich om deel te nemen aan het IBBT-onderzoek CUPID, voluit Cultural Profile and Information Database. In CUPID komen verschillende aspecten aan bod: hoe kan cultuur- en vrijetijdsinformatie zo optimaal mogelijk worden verzameld en beheerd; hoe kun je cultuur- en vrijetijdsinformatie best categoriseren; hoe kun je informatie doelgericht ontsluiten naar specifieke individuen/doelgroepen; welke interessante distributiemodellen en ontsluitingsmechanismen zijn er voor de cultuurparticipant. Informatie over CUPID werd beschikbaar gesteld op het Brokerage Event van IBBT op 7 mei 2008. Zie projectfiche.

Vooruit participates in the IBBT research project CUPID, which stands for Cultural Profile and Information Database. CUPID will address several issues: how can information about culture and leisure be gathered and managed optimally; how is this information best categorised; how is it best made available to specific individuals or target groups and which distribution models or mechanisms are interesting for the culture lover? Check the project leaflet of CUPID (that was presented on IBBT’s Brokerage Event on the 7th of May 2008).

Vooruit stapt in 2008 opnieuw in enkele onderzoeksprojecten ondersteund door het ICT-onderzoeksinstituut IBBT. Eén van die projecten heet DEUS, het letterwoord voor Deployment and Easy Use of Wireless Services. Op het IBBT Brokerage Event op 7 mei 2008 werd informatie over dat project ter beschikking gesteld. Het ICT-onderzoeksinstituut IBBT start een Art&D-programma op: een jaarlijks programma van projecttoelagen aan kunstenaars (individuen of collectieven) voor projecten die ICT-onderzoek als kernelement omvatten. Vanaf vandaag, 19 november, kunnen aanvragen worden ingediend. We willen u vragen om deze oproep door te seinen naar geïnteresseerde kunstenaars.

The ICT research institute IBBT has launched an annual Art&D grants programme for artistic projects focusing on ICT research and development. As of the 19th of November, you can send in project proposals. We would like to ask our colleagues and other contacts to spread the word among interested artists.

Kunstencentrum Vooruit was een van de trekkers van het project (Wireless Building Automation (WBA) van het IBBT (Interdisciplinair Instituut voor BreedbandTechnologie). Na de workshop rond het IBBT-project Virtual Arts Centre of the Future (VACF) op 20 april (zie verslag), willen we ook dit project graag afsluiten met een workshop. Op 21 juni geven we een demonstratie van de resultaten van WBA.

Vooruit Arts Centre was one of the driving forces behind IBBT’s (Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology)Wireless Building Automation (WBA) project. Seeing we closed off the VACF (Visual Arts Centre of the Future) project with a workshop, we would like to do the same for the WBA project. On the 21st of June we will present the results of the WBA project.
