De eerste editie van Jazz&Sounds is achter rug. Het festival – een samenwerking tussen Vooruit, De Bijloke, Gent Jazz, het Conservatorium en KASK – slaagde erin om een brede waaier van actuele muziek te presenteren over de genres heen. In De Morgen toonde jazzrecensent Didier Wijnants zich na afloop zeer enthousiast: Een gouden formule, dat is de conclusie na de eerste editie van Jazz & Sounds. (...) Dat het goed zat, werd donderdagavond duidelijk. In Vooruit gingen nieuwsgierige (vaak jonge) mensen op zoek naar muzikaal avontuur in alle uithoeken van het gebouw. In de balzaal werden de dichters Remco Campert en Jules Deelder stijlvol ondersteund en gecounterd door saxofonist Ben Sluijs. De dichters acteerden op routine, maar Sluijs werkte hard om een samenhangend verhaal te smeden. Op hetzelfde moment stond saxofonist-klarinettist Colin Stetson in de Domzaal. Hij was de talk of the town van deze dag met zijn bijzonder indrukwekkende blaastechniek – circular breathing van een huiveringwekkend niveau. Die vrees was er ook later op de avond bij het oorverdovende, tot trance voerende geluid van Hairy Bones met Peter Brötzmann. In de wandelgangen werd over dat alles druk gepraat en dat zette de toon: een fijne drukte en een honger naar muzikale verwondering. En ook op de community van de Vooruitsite werd uitbundig gereageerd op het festival.

The first edition of the Jazz & Sounds Festival has come to an end. The festival – a collaboration between Vooruit, De Bijloke, Gent Jazz, the Conservatory, and the KASK – brought together a wide variety of contemporary music from diverse genres. De Morgen’s jazz critic Didier Wijnants praised the festival in his review, calling it “a golden formula, that’s the conclusion you can draw after the first edition of Jazz & Sounds. (…) Thursday night showed the potential of the festival. At Vooruit, adventurous – and often young – visitors were treated to experimental concerts in all corners of the building. In the Balzaal, poets Remco Campert and Jules Deelder were supported and countered in style by saxophone player Ben Sluijs. While the poets were on automatic pilot, Sluijs worked hard to create a coherent whole. At that same moment, saxophonist/clarinettist Colin Stetson was performing in the Domzaal. He quickly became the talk of the town with his formidable breath control and circular breathing. On the same night, the ear-splitting, entrancing sound of the Hairy Bones featuring Peter Brötzmann was equally awe-inspiring. People exchanged impressions in the hallways, which defined the atmosphere: pleasant, vibrant, and with a thirst for musical discoveries.” The Vooruit Community was also incredibly enthusiastic about the festival.

Gent is een festival rijker. Of beter: twee ‘oude’ festivals (De Week Van de Hedendaagse muziek en Jazz Indoor) zijn opgegaan in een nieuw, jaarlijks initiatief, het Jazz & Sounds festival. Dat festival is een unieke samenwerking tussen drie concertorganisatoren (Jazz en Muziek, Muziekcentrum De Bijloke en Vooruit) en twee educatieve instellingen (Muzikon vzw van de Hogeschool Gent – Conservatorium en de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten, kortweg KASK).

Three organisers (Gent Jazz Festival, De Bijloke Music Centre and Vooruit Arts Centre) and 2 educational organizations (University College Ghent – Faculty of Music and the University College Ghent – Faculty of Fine Arts) will work together in the annual initiative, the Jazz & Sounds Festival.

Time 2009 is het negende en laatste Time Festival. Curatoren-kunstenaars Dirk Braeckman en Els Dietvorst maakten er een statement van: Time 2009 is een boek, veeleer een denkplek dan een evenement. Hun initiatief wil meer tijd géven dan nemen. Op 13 november zal Time is a book voor het eerst aan het publiek getoond worden. Dit gebeurt met een feestelijke book launch in de Bank van de Arbeid (Volderstraat 1, Gent). Vanaf die datum maak je ook kennis met (facetten van) het boek in de “time circles”. Vooruit is zo’n time circle, met een tentoonstelling van Nikolaus Gangsterer in het Bespreekbureau.

Time 2009 is the ninth and last edition of Time Festival and above all, a statement by the curators Dirk Braeckman and Els Dietvorst. Time 2009 is a book. A place to think rather than an event. In the rat race of life, this edition of the festival wants to give more time rather than taking it. On the 13th of November the Timebook will be launched wit an official book launch at the Bank van de Arbeid (Volderstraat 1, 9000 Ghent at 8:00 p.m.). The Timebook will spread out over the city of Ghent in ‘Time Circles’, an initiative in which a number of like-minded organizations use Time is a book as a source of inspiration. Vooruit is one of the time circles, with an exhibition by Nikolaus Gansterer in its box office.

Europalia focust dit jaar op China. Sinds een geslaagde samenwerking rond Rusland (Progress festival) kan Vooruit in het kader van Europalia ruimte maken om de alternatieve muziekscene van het gastland te belichten. Ook deze keer bleek dat geen evidente opdracht; een land als China is er niet happig op om artiesten uit de underground scene voor een voetlicht te plaatsen.

This year, Europalia will focus on China. After a successful collaboration during the Russian edition – the Progress festival – Vooruit will put the spotlight on China’s alternative music scene for this edition. Just like last time, this was no easy feat; China is not to keen on bringing underground artists to the public’s attention.

The game is up! is naar jaarlijkse gewoonte een platform voor een aantal internationale podiumkunstenaars die er hun werk voor het eerst in België presenteren. Om te beginnen is er de wereldpremière van W.M.D. (just the low points), de nieuwe voorstelling van Sponsored by Nobody. (zie fragment making of:)

The game is up! offers an annual platform for several international dramatists showing their work in Belgium for the first time. Kicking off the festival is the world premiere of W.M.D. (just the low points), Sponsored by Nobody’s new piece. (watch a clip about the making of:)

Samenwerkingen zijn steeds belangrijk geweest voor het Etoiles Polaires festival. Samen met Etoiles Polaires vzw (Jan De Vroede) gaan we na welke gastmuzikanten, in dit geval Montrealse, we aan lokale artiesten kunnen koppelen. We zoeken naar puzzelstukken die in elkaar passen, terwijl ze soms van heel verschillende puzzels afkomstig zijn… Nieuwe samenwerkingen opzetten verplicht ons dan ook om een stuk dieper te graven dan bij een klassieke receptieve programmering. Met boeiende muzikanten knopen we een gesprek aan waarbij we peilen naar hun interesse in een samenwerking met andere muzikanten. Sommige geven je carte blanche, anderen zijn heel specifiek.

Collaborations have always been important for the Etoiles Polaires Festival. Together with the Etoiles Polaires vzw (Jan De Vroede) we will find out which guest musicians, from Montreal this year, we can set up with local artists. We are looking for pieces of the puzzle that fit together, even if they come from very different puzzles. Setting up new collaborations is much harder work than just programming bands in the classic way. We talk with inspiring musicians and ask them whether they are interested in a collaboration with other artists. Some of them let you call the shots, other are very specific about what they want.

Er komt een nieuwe editie van Istanbul Ekspres, een coproductie van intercultureel centrum De Centrale en Vooruit (zie verslag editie 2006): van 15 t/m 24 januari 2009. In het kader van dat muziekfestival presenteren Vooruit, De Centrale, Victoria Deluxe en C.H.I.P.S. vzw een intercultureel digitaal jongerenproject.

There will be a new editon of Istanbul Ekspres, a co-production of intercultural centre De Centrale and Vooruit (see the report of the 2006 edition – Dutch only): from the 15th to the 24th of January 2009. For this music festival, Vooruit, De Centrale, Victoria Deluxe and C.H.I.P.S. vzw will present an intercultural digital youth project.

We willen u van harte uitnodigen om een voorstel in te dienen voor de conferentie Tickle Your Catastrophe! die zal plaatsvinden op 6 en 7 maart 2009 in Vooruit, als onderdeel van het kunstenfestival the game is up!. De conferentie is een gezamenlijk initiatief van Universiteit Gent, KASK, Vooruit en NGE, zie catastrophe.ugent.be.

We cordially invite you to submit a proposal for the Tickle Your Catastrophe! conference, which will take place from 6 to 7 March 2009 at the Vooruit Arts Centre, in Ghent, Belgium, during the arts festival The Game is Up! . Welke rol speelt de catastrofe vandaag in de filosofie, kunst en wetenschap? Rampscenario’s waren altijd al een onderdeel van het culturele bewustzijn. Maar bij het begin van een nieuw millennium lijkt de catastrofe een nieuwe gedaante te krijgen: dreigende uitputting van oliebronnen en bijgevolg de implosie van de breekbare wereldeconomie; terrorisme; beurscrashes; de bevolkingsexplosie; nieuwe epidemieën…

Which role does the catastrophe play in philosophy, art and science today? Although worst-case scenarios have always been part of our cultural identity, the catastrophe has taken on a different form at the beginning of the new millennium. The impending depletion of the world’s oil resources and the implosion of the global economy, international terrorism, the breakdown of the financial market, overpopulation, new epidemics…

Na een verkenning van de Finse muziekscene in 07 organiseren Vooruit en Etoiles Polaires vzw een derde editie van het muziekfestival Etoiles Polaires rond artiesten uit Montréal, van 3 t.e.m. 6 december 08. (Zie ook vorige post van mei 08: Etoiles Polaires 08 zal focussen op Montréal.) Het wordt geen complete staalkaart van wat Montréal te bieden heeft, hopelijk wel een treffend sfeerbeeld van de muziekstad Montréal en een voorschot op de nieuwe golf pop- en rockartiesten die in eigen land zijn doorgebroken en nu resoluut hun weg naar Europa zoeken: Wolf Parade, Land of Talk, The Stills, Plants and Animals, Think about Life, Hot Springs,…

After exploring the Finnish music scene in 07, Vooruit and Etoiles Polaires vzw will organise a third edition of the Etoiles Polaires music festival with artists from Montréal from the 3rd to the 6th of October (Remember our post in May 08: Etoiles Polaires zal focussen op Montréal). We won’t be able to offer you a complete sampling of Montréal’s music scene, but hopefully, we’ll be able to give you a good idea of Montréal as a music city. We’ll introduce you to a wave of young pop and rock artist who have made it in their home country and are now looking to repeat this success in Europe: Wolf Parade, Land of Talk, The Stills, Plants and Animals, Think about Life, Hot Springs, etc.
