Vorige week was Amsterdam voor de dertiende keer het decor voor Sonic Acts, een onregelmatig terugkerend festival rond audiovisuele kunst met een conferentie, een uitgebreid live- en filmprogramma en een tentoonstelling. De titel van deze editie was ‘the poetics of space’, en komt van het boek ‘La Poétique de l’Espace’ uit 1958 door de Franse filosoof Gaston Bachelard. We lezen in de inleiding dat het boek in detail omschrijft hoe ruimte en architectuur zijn effect heeft op mensen en dat Bachelard een pleidooi houdt voor een nieuw soort van architectuur van de ruimte waarin niet zozeer wetenschap en functionaliteit op het voorplan staat maar ervaring en verbeelding. Last week, Amsterdam played host to the 13th edition of Sonic Acts, an irregularly recurring festival for audiovisual arts, with a conference, an elaborate live programme, a film programme, and an exhibition. The title of this edition was ‘The Poetics of Space’, which comes from the 1958 book ‘La Poétique de l’Espace’ by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. From the introduction we can derive that in the book, Bachelard describes how architecture and space affect people. Bachelard also makes a stand for a new type of architecture of space, shifting its focus from science and practicality to experience and imagination. Op 7 oktober opende de tentoonstelling van Almost Cinema 2009 officieel de deuren, in aanwezigheid van de deelnemende kunstenaars. Gemist? Dit videoverslag laat ze ze aan het woord over hun bijdrage. De partners van Almost Cinema, Filmfestival Gent en Vooruit, kregen heel positieve reacties op de laagdrempelige tentoonstelling die cinema-ervaringen van het scherm losweekt. De Morgen (Jozefien Van Beek) bedacht de tentoonstelling met een 4-sterren-recensie.

In samenwerking met het Filmfestival Gent onderzoekt Vooruit in het programma Almost Cinema op welke manieren verhalen kunnen loskomen van het scherm. De kunstenaars in Almost Cinema zijn er zelden op uit om een verhaal in een afgewerkte en geprojecteerde vorm op de toeschouwer los te laten. In de plaats daarvan worden stukjes realiteit opengelegd en gefileerd, en wordt de toeschouwer uitgenodigd om er midden in te stappen, rond te kijken en lijflijk fragmenten van een verhaal te voelen en te ondervinden.

At Almost Cinema, Vooruit and the Ghent Film Festival try to discover how stories can develop separately from the screen. The artists at Almost Cinema don’t tell their stories by presenting an edited and projected form, but by uncovering and stripping chunks of reality and inviting the visitor to step right into the heart of them, looking around and physically experiencing fragments of a story.

Tijdens de jongste Almost Cinema (okt 2008) zette Vooruit z’n deuren open voor een Girl Geek Dinner. Journaliste Emilie Lachaert was erbij en publiceerde een leuk verslag in het weekendmagazine van van Het Nieuwsblad van 24 januari. Ze was vooral onder de indruk van de “head swap” waarop Crew/Eric Joris de girl geeks tracteerde…

During the last edition of Almost Cinema (Oct 2008) Vooruit opened its doors to a Girl Geek Dinner. Journalist Emilie Lachaert also attended the event and published an entertaining piece about it in the January 24 edition the weekend magazine of Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. She was particularly impressed with the “head swap” presented to the girl geeks by Crew/Eric Joris.

Almost Cinema, een jaarlijks evenement van Vooruit en Filmfestival Gent, biedt een boeiende kijk op de flinterdunne scheiding tussen film, mediakunst, theater en muziek. Het volledig programma wordt toegelicht op de Vooruitsite.

Noem het gerust het mekka van de mediakunst. Ars Electronica is het grootste en oudste festival voor kunst en technologie in Europa. Naast de traditionele tentoonstelling in het OKCentrum, is er dit jaar een heuse expostraat te bezichtigen.

It’s safe to say that Ars Electronica is the Mecca of Media Arts. Ars Electronica is the biggest and oldest festival for art and technology in Europe. Apart from the traditional exhibition in the Ars Electronica Centre, this year, there was also an exhibition street.

INTERFACE is het nieuw opgerichte academisch platform dat de raakvlakken tussen kunst en wetenschap wil opzoeken. De interuniversitaire stuurgroep van INTERFACE wil in de eerste plaats actoren en instituten samenbrengen die de kunst en wetenschap in theorie en praktijk verkennen.

INTERFACE is a newly established academic platform that tries to find common ground between the art and the science world. INTERFACE’s inter university steering group mainly wants to bring together actors and institutes that explore arts and sciences in theory and in practice.
