Vooruit-exe

Afgelopen week vond de vijfde editie plaats van Korte Metten. Al is het moeilijk om precies te omschrijven waarvoor dit initiatief staat, je kan stellen dat het kort, hevig, onverwacht en gewaagd werk samenbrengt uit diverse disciplines als dans, literatuur, installatiekunst, muziek en theater. Onder de noemer Korte Metten presenteren we soms try-outs van artiesten die een tijd in residentie waren of die we in de toekomst eventueel een werkruimte willen bieden; andere projecten zijn voltooid maar kort, klein en/of experimenteel.

Last week the fifth edition of Korte Metten took place. It’s hard to describe exactly what this initiative stands for, but you could say that it bundles short, powerful, unexpected and daring work from different disciplines, such as dance, literature, installation art, music and the theatre. Under the name Korte Metten, we’ll present try-outs by former or future artists in residence and other finished work that is short, small or experimental.

Ter gelegenheid van de vijfde keer gingen we voor een luxeversie van de Korte Metten. Zo keerden we terug naar waar het op 12 december 2008 begon: de Concertzaal van Vooruit. Een speciale opstelling gaf aan de projecten van alle deelnemende kunstenaars een extra élan. De officieuze ondertitel Avonturen in de avonduren werd ook tijdens de vijfde editie waargemaakt, het publiek kreeg letterlijk en figuurlijk alle hoeken van de kamer te zien. Ik beperk me hier tot de twee theatrale interventies van de avond: Kurt Vandendriessche met een toonmoment van Perfides en Letter pieces van de Britse componist Matthew Shlomowitz.

At the occasion of the fifth edition, we opted for a luxury edition of Korte Metten. We returned to the place where it all began on the 12th of December 2008: Vooruit’s Concertzaal. A special setup added prestige to the work of the participating artists. The fifth edition once again lived up to the unofficial tagline of Korte Metten, ‘Adventures in the evening hours’. The audience was literally shown every nook and cranny of the room. I’ll limit myself to discussing two theatrical interventions that night: Kurt Vandendriessche with a viewing of Perfides and Letter pieces by British composer Matthew Shlomowitz.

In de Foyer van de Concertzaal inviteerde acteur Kurt Vandendriessche ons om te komen kijken naar een toonmoment van Perfides, het stuk dat hij laat regisseren door zijn vijfjarige dochter Lilith. Die was er alleszins al de hele dag meer dan klaar voor. Al was er gepland dat Lilith met haar rug naar de toeschouwer zou zitten te tekenen als het publiek binnekomt, op het moment suprême moest de jongedame dringend naar het toilet. Plankenkoorts wellicht. Dat Lilith artistieke genen heeft (haar moeder is Charlotte Vanden Eynde) leidt geen twijfel. Ze charmeert het publiek en komt creatief voor de dag met haar zelf ontworpen kostuums en verhaallijnen. Toch lijk t het soms wat teveel op een tafereel in een modaal gezin als je stiekem binnengluurt op een zondagnamiddag… Om tot een volwaardige voorstelling uit te groeien, zal Kurt toch moeten ingrijpen in de wereld van zijn dochter, meen ik. Het duo staat alleszins dit weekend al geprogrammeerd op FRESH, bij BUDA in Kortrijk. Benieuwd hoe ze het er daar vanaf zullen brengen. Onderstaande foto’s van Reinout Hiel:

In the Concertzaal Lodge, actor Kurt Vandendriessche invited us for a viewing of Perfides, the piece entirely directed by his five-year-old daughter Lilith. She had been looking forward to the show all day. But at moment of truth, when Lilith was supposed to be drawing with her back turned to the audience as the spectators flooded in, the young lady urgently needed the bathroom. Stage fright, we suppose. There’s no doubt that young Lilith has artistic genes, her mother is Belgian artist Charlotte Vanden Eynde, after all. She charmed the audience and showed her creative side with her self-designed costumes and storylines. But the whole performance often felt too much like spying on an ordinary family on a Sunday afternoon. I’m afraid that in order to make a full-fledged show, Kurt will have to intervene in the world of his daughter. This weekend, the duo will be performing at Buda in Kortrijk, during FRESH. Meteen erna kregen we de eerste van vier Letter pieces te zien, van de Britse componist Matthew Shlomowitz. In zijn unieke schriftuur combineert hij klank en beweging, waardoor de partitiuur meteen ook choreografische aantekeningen bevat. Voor Korte Metten schreef Shlomowitz een nieuw stuk Met uitvoerders als Marc Knoop, Tom Pauwels (gitarist van Ictus), Shila Anaraki en Tomma Wessel werden dit hoogstaande stukjes choreo-muziek. Shlomowitz plant een nieuwe ‘Letter Piece’ voor de komende editie van het festival voor nieuwe muziek TRANSIT in Leuven.

Next up was the first of in a series of four Letter Pieces, by British composer Matthew Shlomowitz. He combines sound and movement in a unique composition, which means that the score contains choreographic directions. For Korte Metten Shlomowitz wrote a new piece. Thanks to performers Marc Knoop, Tom Pauwels (guitarist in Ictus), Shila Anaraki and Tomma Wessel this became a superb piece of musical choreography. Shlomowitz is working on a new Letter Piece, which will be performed at TRANSIT, a festival for new music in Leuven.
