Duurzaamheid, ecologie, cradle to cradle, …. Vooruit schaart zich graag achter projecten die de leefbaarheid en levenskwaliteit van mensen opschroeven. Na initiatieven als How to save the world in ten days, Dikke-truiendag of Donderdag Veggiedag geven we van 11 maart tot 21 maart 2010 graag het woord aan ontwerpers en kunstenaars met een hart voor duurzaamheid, recyclage en schone dingen. Onder de noemer ekomotiv 1.0 mag organisator Kowboy Kaos vzw het publiek laten kennismaken met ‘gestyled duurzaam leven’ via een expo, workshops, lezingen, open ateliers en pop-up shops.

Sustainability, ecology, Cradle to Cradle, … Vooruit is eager to support projects that improve people’s comfort and quality of life. After projects such as How to save the world in ten days, Warm Sweater Day and Thursday Veggie Day, we will now put the spotlight on designers and artists with a heart for sustainability, recycling and beautiful objects from the 11th until the 21st of March 2010. Under the name ekomotive 1.0, organizer Kowboy Kaos vzw wants to introduce the audience to a ‘stylish sustainable life’, with an exhibition, workshops, lectures, open studios, and pop-up shops.

PROGRAMMA / PROGRAMME

Kowboy Kaos vzw speurde het land en het net af en vond een pak sterke projecten, originele initiatieven, verrassende ontwerpers, knappe kunstenaars en leuke organisaties die werken volgens ecologische en sociaal-economische principes. De meest toonaangevende organisaties en ontwerpers zullen op uitnodiging van Kowboy Kaos hun modeaccessoires, (tuin)meubelen, verlichting, juwelen, textieltoepassingen in Vooruit voorstellen. Kowboy Kaos introduceert op ekomotiv 1.0 ook een eigen project: “van afdanker tot hip”.

Kowboy Kaos vzw searched the country for strong projects, original initiatives, surprising designers, hot artists and interesting organisations that work according to ecological and socio-economic principles. The most trend-setting organizations and designers were invited by Kowboy Kaos to present their fashion accessories, (garden) furniture, lighting, jewellery and fabric usage at Vooruit. Kowboy Kaos will also present its own project at ekomotiv 1.0, ‘from hand-me-down to hip’.

Van 11 maart tot 21 maart 2010 is de tentoonstelling te bekijken in het Café van Vooruit. In die periode opent ekomotiv ook een pop-up ecoshop in het Bespreekbureau, dagelijks van 14 tot 22 uur.

De ekomotiv 1.0-lezingen en workshops zijn gepland op 16 en 17 maart, telkens van 14 tot 18 uur. Hier staat het programma. Deelnemen is gratis, maar de deelnemers worden verzocht zich in te schrijven via dit formulier van Kowboy Kaos vzw.

The exhibition will run from the 11th of March to the 21st of March 2010 in the Vooruit Café. In the same period, ekomotiv will open a pop-up shop in Vooruit’s box office, open every day from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The ekomotiv 1.0 conferences will take place on the 16th and 17th of March, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on both dates. You’ll find the programme here. Participating is free of charge, but please remember to register with this form provided by Kowboy Kaos vzw.

ONTWERPERS, KUNSTENAARS, ORGANISATIES,... OP / DESIGNERS, ARTISTS AND ORGANIZATIONS AT EKOMOTIV 1.0

Trash Design: Kringwinkel ‘t Rad uit Ruddervoorde stak z’n schouders onder een project waarbij o.a. wastrommels een nieuw leven krijgen als lampenkap en ook andere gebruikte elektrische en elektronische toestellen omgevormd worden tot uniek design. / ‘t Rad, a thrift store in Ruddervoorde, decided to support a project that turns used appliances into unique designs, transforming a washing machine drum into a lampshade, for example.

Gentmade: De Gentse Kringwinkel Ateljee pakt uit met een originele handtassenlijn vervaardigd uit beschadigd textiel. / Ghent thrift store Ateljee will present a unique range of handbags, made from damaged fabric. Van afdanker tot hip: Kowboy Kaos vzw i.s.m. de Kringwinkel Vlaamse Ardennen sloegen samen met een aantal ontwerpers (Julie2, Marijn Dionys, aM, Naomi Batache, Evy Van Hövell tot Westerflier en Reinout Hiel) de handen in elkaar om afgedankt meubilair om te vormen tot hippe en duurzame meubels. Rewind: Ecodesign met de nadruk op hergebruik, het beste bewijs dat mooie vormgeving ecologisch verantwoord kan zijn. / Ecodesign focusing on recycling, proving that an attractive design can be ecologically sustainable as well.

Remix: De laatstejaarsstudenten Interieurvormgeving van de Katholieke Hogeschool Mechelen schenken een nieuw leven aan tweedehandsobjecten uit kringwinkels en verrassen met geestige ontwerpen zoals een vogelkastje dat ooit een wereldbol was. / This year’s senior Interior Design students at the Katholieke Hogeschool Mechelen (Mechelen Catholic University College) will give new life to second-hand objects from thrift stores and will surprise us with quirky designs, such as a birdhouse fabricated from a globe.

Ick Reuvis: De man achter het ‘Ick Reuvis’-label, Patrick Reuvis, licht in een lezing het Remix-project toe en geeft een introductie tot ecologisch ontwerpen. / The man behind the ‘Ick Reuvis label, Patrick Reuvis, will talk about his project during a lecture while also giving an introduction to ecodesign.

Rotor vzw: Dat ook industrieel afval kan (her)(ge)bruikt worden, bewijst dit Brusselse collectief. Hun slim (her)gebruik van afgedankte materialen leverde KunstenfestivaldesArts al 2 jaar originele bureaus op. / This collective from Brussels proves that industrial waste can also be recycled. Thanks to their clever use of waste material, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts has been enjoying its unique desks for two years.

David Graas: Een van de leukste ontwerpen van deze Nederlandse product designer is een lamp die eigenlijk een kartonnen doos is waar een lichtbron in zit en waar de vorm van een staande lamp uitgesneden werd. / One of this Dutch product designer’s most remarkable designs is a lamp that is actually a cardboard box cut in the shape of a floor lamp.

De vlijtige liesjes : Lies en Lizzy maken samen o.a. vertederende ringen, broches, oorbellen en manchetknopen uit oud porselein. / Lies and Lizzy make sweet rings, brooches, earrings and cufflinks from reused porcelain.

Het Naaiatelier: In een retro decor transformeren een aantal vlijtige naai(st)ers jouw oude stuk textiel in één uur tijd tot een tas, schort, zakdoek, windhond of iets helemaal anders. / In a retro setting, a couple of diligent seamstresses will turn your old piece of fabric into a bag, apron, handkerchief, draft guards, etc. in one hour.

Evelien Lafond en Sabine Gevaert: Evelien (van Ovam) en Sabine (van ontwerpbureau Cides) komen het gebruik van de Ecoliser toelichten in de praktijk. / Evelien (of Flemish waste management company Ovam) and Sabine (of design agency Cides) will elaborate on the practical usage of the Ecoliser.

Jan de Haas: De directeur van het Rotterdamse ‘Studio Hergebruik’ legt in een lezing kort het cradle to cradle-principe uit en vertelt aansluitend alles over de unieke (draag)tassenprojecten van de Studio. / The manager of the Rotterdam-based ‘Studio Hergebruik’ will give a lecture on Cradle to Cradle Design, followed by a talk on the Studio’s unique (carrier) bag project.

Werner Baumann en Mark Fleischhauer: Werner en Mark van het Duitse Institut für Umweltforschung komen een exclusieve workshop geven gebaseerd op hun ervaringen met Zweitsinn. Een succesverhaal waarbij ze sedert 2008 duurzaam meubilair produceren en verkopen in heel Duitsland. / Werner and Mark of the German Institut für Umweltforschung will give an exclusive workshop based on their experiences with Zweitsinn. A success story that has seen them produce and sell sustainable furniture all over Germany since 2008.

Doreen Westphal: Doreen vertelt, met haar eigen ervaring als startpunt, over hoe je als ontwerper de stap kunt zetten van een prototype naar een duurzaam geïndustrialiseerd proces. MEER INFO OVER / MORE ABOUT “VAN AFDANKER TOT HIP” (“FROM HAND-ME-DOWN TO HIP”)

Kort samengevat hebben we bij Kowboy Kaos i.s.m. de Kringwinkel van de Vlaamse Ardennen een pilootproject opgestart waarbinnen we onderzoeken hoe we vanuit afval (= verzameld afgedankt meubilair) een duurzaam product kunnen produceren met een toegevoegde waarde, en waarbij de kringloopcentra een bredere consumentengroep kunnen aanspreken met een duurzame en ecologisch verantwoorde meubellijn. Momenteel zijn we samen met 5 ontwerpers prototypes van een aantal meubels aan het ontwikkelen die voldoen aan de volgende voorwaarden:

In short, we at Kowboy Kaos and the thrift store Vlaamse Ardennen have started a pilot project in which we investigate how to develop a sustainable product with an added value from waste material (i.e. collected discarded furniture), allowing for the Flemish thrift store network to appeal to a wider audience thanks to a sustainable and ecological furniture range. With the help of 5 designers, we are currently developing the prototypes, which should meet the following conditions:

• • reproduceerbaar zijn op basis van gebruikte of gerecycleerde materialen / The pieces should be able to be reproduced on the basis of used or recycled materials
• • betaalbaar zijn voor een breder publiek / The pieces have to be affordable for a wide audience
• • dagelijks gebruiksgemak (functionaliteit) combineren met een sterke esthetische uitstraling (design) / The pieces have to combine everyday practicality with a powerful aesthetic
• • het productieproces is haalbaar binnen de grenzen van de sociale economie / The production of the pieces has to be possible within the confines of the social economy
• • een prototype moet zo weinig mogelijk gebruik maken van nieuwe materialen en grondstoffen / The prototype should use as little use of new materials and resources as possible
• • bij het reproduceren van de prototypes willen we zo weinig mogelijk energie/grondstoffen verbruiken / When reproducing the prototypes, we want to use as little energy and resources as possible

De uiteindelijke bedoeling van het project situeert zich op 3 verschillende vlakken:

• • we willen de afvalberg reduceren en (over)productie tegengaan door de levensduur van bestaande materialen te verlengen door ze een nieuwe bestemming te geven / Reduce waste and battle overproduction by increasing the life of existing materials by giving them a new use
• • we willen bijkomende tewerkstelling creëren binnen de sociale economie / Create new jobs in the social economy
• • we willen mensen een volwaardig en betaalbaar alternatief bieden voor de (wegwerp) meubels die zij kunnen kopen binnen het reguliere circuit / Offer people a valid and affordable alternative for throw-away furniture available on the regular circuit
