Op de wereldtentoonstelling Expo 2010 Shanghai China zal Oost-Vlaanderen het Belgische paviljoen invullen van 22 tot 28 augustus. De recente erkenning van Gent als Unesco Creative City of Music prikkelt de Stad Gent en zijn artistieke partners om vooral de Gentse muziekscène in Shanghai voor het voetlicht te brengen. Vooruit onderzoekt samen met Etoiles Polaires vzw of de boeiende samenwerkingsprojecten tussen muzikanten uit Gent en Beijing van het alternatief muziekfestival China Express (december 2009, i.s.m. Europalia China) een vertrekpunt kunnen vormen voor nieuwe concerten in China—zowel in Shanghai als in Beijing. Dat lijstje muzikanten mag uiteraard aangevuld met andere straffe artiesten uit de Gentse scene.

At the 2010 World Fair in Shanghai, the province of East Flanders will take up the Belgian pavilion from the 22nd to the 28th of August. The recent appointment of Ghent as a Unesco Creative City of Music has stimulated the City of Ghent and its artistic partners to put a spotlight on the Ghent music scene at the Shanghai World Fair. Together with the vzw Etoiles Polaires, Vooruit will investigate whether the alternative music festival China Express (which took place in December 2009, in association with Europalia China) could be the starting point for new concerts in China, more precisely in Shanghai and Beijing. We will try to supplement the original list of musicians with a number of talented artists from the Ghent scene.

Welke ideeën liggen er al op tafel? / Ideas currently on the table

Absynthe Minded, An Pierlé & White Velvet en The Hong Kong Dong zijn drie spraakmakende Gentse popgroepen die we in de clubs en concertzalen van Shanghai en Beijing bij het Chinese publiek willen introduceren.

Absynthe Minded, An Pierlé & White Velvet and The Hong Kong Dong are three high-profile Ghent bands that we would like to introduce to the Chinese audience in Shanghai and Beijing clubs and concert venues.

De samenwerkingen tussen Belgische en Chinese muzikanten die tijdens het China Express festival werden gerealiseerd, willen we ook presenteren. Daarbij waren betrokken: pianiste Heleen Van Haegenborgh, contrabassiste Ann Eysermans en guzhengspeelster Wu Fei (zie video); drummer Lander Gyselinck en saxofonist Li Tieqiao; Esther Venrooy (elektronica) en Wu Na (Guqin). We would also like to present the collaborations between Belgian and Chinese musicians that were set up for the China Express festival. The participating artists were: pianist Heleen Van Haegenborgh, double bass player Ann Eysermans and Wu Fei, player of the ghuzeng (check out the video), drummer Lander Gyselinck and saxophone player Li Tie Qiao; Esther Venrooy (electronica) and Wu Na (guqin). Daarnaast werd aan dj Grazzhoppa gevraagd om een workshop te geven aan jonge Chinese dj’s en met de lokale turntablescene samen te werken. Zowel de Gentse als Chinese muzikanten zijn enthousiast over het project en terplekke is men reeds de organisatie van de concerten aan het voorbereiden.

We also asked DJ Grazhoppa to organize a workshop for young Chinese DJs and to set up collaborations with local DJs. The project was positively hailed by artists in Ghent and China, and gigs in China are being prepared as we speak.

Het project is nog niet rond, maar het plan is er om met een divers programma de titel Ghent- Unesco Creative City of Music de nodige luister bij te zetten. Wordt ongetwijfeld vervolgd.

The project is still a work in progress, and we plan to promote it with a diverse programme under the name Ghent-Unesco Creative City of Music. To be continued…
