Waarom trekt de mens geen lessen uit het verleden, uit het blindweg telkens opnieuw tegen diezelfde steen aanlopen? Leert ervaring ons dan werkelijk niks? Met de “Les van de Eeuw” suggereert Vooruit dat er nog hoop is. Tijdens de voorbije 6 edities richtten we ons vizier op democratie, religie en nationalisme. We stelden hopen vragen aan beleidslui, academici, journalisten, artiesten én het publiek en kregen niet altijd antwoord. Maar die reactie van een 17-jarige scholier die de Les van de Eeuw bijwoonde, gaf aan dat het raak was; “zo had ik het nog niet bekeken”, zei die.

Net zoals de voorgaande zal de 7de Les van de Eeuw op 24 maart 2010 bestaan uit een ochtend-, namiddag- en avondles, waarbij op verschillende doelgroepen wordt ingespeeld: scholieren en studenten, academici en vaklui die betrokken zijn bij het thema en het brede, geïnteresseerde publiek. Na zes edities rond politiek-historische thema’s focust deze editie op het begrip ‘les’ zelf. Op het onderwijs dus, dat door velen (gemakshalve) met de vinger wordt gewezen voor al wat fout loopt in deze maatschappij.

Net als vorig jaar doet het Vooruit Café mee met Dikke-truiendag. Op 12 februari draaien we de verwarming enkele graden lager en zoeken we samen met Cirq vzw naar andere, leuke manieren om ons te verwarmen: een omgekeerde vestiaire, klare dranken, een heet menu, Meisjes van Plezier, The Human Grijpmachine (met stomende prijzenpot), de IJsknuffelbeer, dj’s Celsius vs Fahrenheit en de Sjiekste Sjaal Contest.

Warm Sweater Day is back! On the 12th of February, we’ll be turning down the heating in the Café as we look for alternative and fun ways to get warm. Together with Cirq we’ll surprise the audience with a Reversed Cloakroom, spirits to warm your spirit, the Human Grabbing Machine (with loads of hot prizes), a cuddling ice bear, a hot menu, sizzling girls, DJs Celsius vs Fahrenheit and the Coolest Scarf Contest.

Duurzaamheid, ecologie, cradle to cradle, …. Vooruit schaart zich graag achter projecten die de leefbaarheid en levenskwaliteit van mensen opschroeven. Na initiatieven als How to save the world in ten days, Dikke-truiendag of Donderdag Veggiedag geven we van 11 maart tot 21 maart 2010 graag het woord aan ontwerpers en kunstenaars met een hart voor duurzaamheid, recyclage en schone dingen. Onder de noemer ekomotiv 1.0 mag organisator Kowboy Kaos vzw het publiek laten kennismaken met ‘gestyled duurzaam leven’ via een expo, workshops, lezingen, open ateliers en pop-up shops.

Sustainability, ecology, Cradle to Cradle, … Vooruit is eager to support projects that improve people’s comfort and quality of life. After projects such as How to save the world in ten days, Warm Sweater Day and Thursday Veggie Day, we will now put the spotlight on designers and artists with a heart for sustainability, recycling and beautiful objects from the 11th until the 21st of March 2010. Under the name ekomotive 1.0, organizer Kowboy Kaos vzw wants to introduce the audience to a ‘stylish sustainable life’, with an exhibition, workshops, lectures, open studios, and pop-up shops.

Het interregionaal platform voor kunst, onderzoek en technologie Transdigital komt in 2010 op kruissnelheid. Na een jaar van zoeken, onderzoeken en concepten uittesten worden de eerste resultaten van de samenwerking tussen cultuurhuizen, kunstenaars, onderzoekscentra en bedrijven in Vlaanderen, Wallonië en Noord-Frankrijk voorgesteld aan het publiek.

Transdigital, the interregional network for art, research and technology will reach its apex in 2010. After a year of investigation, research, and trying out concepts, the first results of the collaboration between arts centres, artists, research centres and companies in Flanders, Wallonia, and Northern France will be presented to the audience.

Transdigital presenteert drie soorten projecten / Transdigital will present three types of projects:

• - Seminaries waarbij kennisoverdracht en networking voorop staat / seminars placing knowledge transfer and networking centrally;
• - Workshops waarbij artiesten, onderzoekers en technologiewereld hands-on aan de slag gaan / workshops where artists, researchers and the tech industry go for the hands-on approach;
• - Producties waarbij artiesten samen met bedrijven de samenwerking in praktijk brengen / productions putting the collaboration between artists and companies in practice.

Afgelopen week vond de vijfde editie plaats van Korte Metten. Al is het moeilijk om precies te omschrijven waarvoor dit initiatief staat, je kan stellen dat het kort, hevig, onverwacht en gewaagd werk samenbrengt uit diverse disciplines als dans, literatuur, installatiekunst, muziek en theater. Onder de noemer Korte Metten presenteren we soms try-outs van artiesten die een tijd in residentie waren of die we in de toekomst eventueel een werkruimte willen bieden; andere projecten zijn voltooid maar kort, klein en/of experimenteel.

Last week the fifth edition of Korte Metten took place. It’s hard to describe exactly what this initiative stands for, but you could say that it bundles short, powerful, unexpected and daring work from different disciplines, such as dance, literature, installation art, music and the theatre. Under the name Korte Metten, we’ll present try-outs by former or future artists in residence and other finished work that is short, small or experimental.

Ter gelegenheid van de vijfde keer gingen we voor een luxeversie van de Korte Metten. Zo keerden we terug naar waar het op 12 december 2008 begon: de Concertzaal van Vooruit. Een speciale opstelling gaf aan de projecten van alle deelnemende kunstenaars een extra élan. De officieuze ondertitel Avonturen in de avonduren werd ook tijdens de vijfde editie waargemaakt, het publiek kreeg letterlijk en figuurlijk alle hoeken van de kamer te zien. Ik beperk me hier tot de twee theatrale interventies van de avond: Kurt Vandendriessche met een toonmoment van Perfides en Letter pieces van de Britse componist Matthew Shlomowitz.

At the occasion of the fifth edition, we opted for a luxury edition of Korte Metten. We returned to the place where it all began on the 12th of December 2008: Vooruit’s Concertzaal. A special setup added prestige to the work of the participating artists. The fifth edition once again lived up to the unofficial tagline of Korte Metten, ‘Adventures in the evening hours’. The audience was literally shown every nook and cranny of the room. I’ll limit myself to discussing two theatrical interventions that night: Kurt Vandendriessche with a viewing of Perfides and Letter pieces by British composer Matthew Shlomowitz.

Op de wereldtentoonstelling Expo 2010 Shanghai China zal Oost-Vlaanderen het Belgische paviljoen invullen van 22 tot 28 augustus. De recente erkenning van Gent als Unesco Creative City of Music prikkelt de Stad Gent en zijn artistieke partners om vooral de Gentse muziekscène in Shanghai voor het voetlicht te brengen. Vooruit onderzoekt samen met Etoiles Polaires vzw of de boeiende samenwerkingsprojecten tussen muzikanten uit Gent en Beijing van het alternatief muziekfestival China Express (december 2009, i.s.m. Europalia China) een vertrekpunt kunnen vormen voor nieuwe concerten in China—zowel in Shanghai als in Beijing. Dat lijstje muzikanten mag uiteraard aangevuld met andere straffe artiesten uit de Gentse scene.

At the 2010 World Fair in Shanghai, the province of East Flanders will take up the Belgian pavilion from the 22nd to the 28th of August. The recent appointment of Ghent as a Unesco Creative City of Music has stimulated the City of Ghent and its artistic partners to put a spotlight on the Ghent music scene at the Shanghai World Fair. Together with the vzw Etoiles Polaires, Vooruit will investigate whether the alternative music festival China Express (which took place in December 2009, in association with Europalia China) could be the starting point for new concerts in China, more precisely in Shanghai and Beijing. We will try to supplement the original list of musicians with a number of talented artists from the Ghent scene.

In 2009 nam Vooruit het initiatief om enkele gelijkgestemde organisaties in binnen- en buitenland samen te brengen in een informeel netwerk, onder de naam WEB. Het gaat om wpZimmer (Antwerpen), Kunstencentrum BUDA (Kortrijk), Frascati (Amsterdam), Fabrik (Potsdam), Hebbel am Ufer (Berlijn), 104 [CENTQUATRE] (Parijs) en Uzès Danse (Uzès). Bij de partners wordt aangevoeld dat de preproductionele fase als een zware last op de schouders van onafhankelijke artiesten ligt. Ze moeten zich vaak bezighouden met alle facetten die het opzetten van een project behelzen zoals budgetbeheer, het zoeken van financiële partners, artistieke planning, residenties zoeken, etc—of ze daarvoor nu de nodige competentie bezitten of niet. In feite is die knowhow wel aanwezig bij de partners van WEB. We delen de ambitie om voor een beperkt aantal artiesten per jaar de opvolging van A tot Z te doen, zodat ze voor één keer hun project op poten kunnen zetten zonder verloren te lopen in de rompslomp van boekhouding en meetings.

In 2009, Vooruit took the initiative to bring together a number of like-minded organizations in Belgium and abroad in an international network called WEB. The participating organizations are wpZimmer (Antwerp), KC Buda (Kortrijk), Frascati (Amsterdam), Fabrik (Potsdam), HAU (Berlijn), 104 (Paris), and Uzès Danse (Uzès). The partners agree that the pre-production phase is a heavy burden for independent artists. They often have to take care of all the aspects of their projects, including budget planning, finding financial partners, artistic planning, finding residencies etc. whether they are skilled to do so or not. However, the WEB partners do possess this knowledge. We share the ambition to follow up a selection of artists from A to Z during an entire year, so the artists can focus on the realization of their project without getting lost in the administrative labyrinth of meetings and finances.

Vooruit heeft een traditie in het verlenen van compositieopdrachten en het (co)produceren van muziekproducties. Dit voorjaar coproduceert Vooruit samen met de Beursschouwburg een nieuw project van de Gentse componist Johan Derycke. Die is vooral bekend van zijn solo-muziektheatervoorstellingen en zijn live muziekbegeleiding bij wielerwedstrijden (Cyclophonics). Als hevige fan van Buster Keaton werkt hij nu aan een score voor Go West. Op dinsdag 23 februari te zien in Vooruit!

Vooruit has a tradition of commissioning compositions and producing or co-producing music productions. This spring, Vooruit and the Beursschouwburg are co-producing a new project by Ghent composer Johan Derycke. Derycke is mainly known for his solo performances combining music and theatre and his live musical accompaniment to cycling events (Cyclophonics). Seeing he’s big fan of Buster Keaton, he’s currently working on a score for Go West. Watch it live at Vooruit on the 23rd of February!

Gent is een festival rijker. Of beter: twee ‘oude’ festivals (De Week Van de Hedendaagse muziek en Jazz Indoor) zijn opgegaan in een nieuw, jaarlijks initiatief, het Jazz & Sounds festival. Dat festival is een unieke samenwerking tussen drie concertorganisatoren (Jazz en Muziek, Muziekcentrum De Bijloke en Vooruit) en twee educatieve instellingen (Muzikon vzw van de Hogeschool Gent – Conservatorium en de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten, kortweg KASK).

Three organisers (Gent Jazz Festival, De Bijloke Music Centre and Vooruit Arts Centre) and 2 educational organizations (University College Ghent – Faculty of Music and the University College Ghent – Faculty of Fine Arts) will work together in the annual initiative, the Jazz & Sounds Festival.

De Kunstbende editie 2010 trekt zich weer op gang. Alles wat zich tussen 11 en 18 jaar bevindt en bevangen is door de muzen, bestormt met gezonde overmoed de podia van Vooruit en andere landelijke hangplekken. Het objectief is roem vergaren, vrienden imponeren en een hoop lol trappen. Wie de Bende kent, weet dat vooral die lol van tel is.

The 2010 edition of De Kunstbende is almost ready for lift-off. Everyone between 11 and 18 years old mesmerized by the muses and audacious enough to show it, will storm the stage at Vooruit and other venues in the country. The goal is to gain fame, impress friends and family and have loads of fun! If you’re familiar with De Bende, you’ll know that it’s primarily the fun part that counts!

Op zaterdag 13 februari ontvangt Vooruit samen met JES Gent 20 juryleden, 30 ambassadeurs van de Bende en een kleine 200 vivante tieners. Tegen de avond worden daar onder vrolijk gedruis 7×3 winnaars uitgekozen en verplaatst het geweld zich naar andere voorrondes en tenslotte naar het finaleweekend in Hasselt begin mei.

On Saturday the 13th of February, Vooruit and Jes Gent will receive the twenty members of the jury, 30 ambassadors of De Bende and about 200 vivacious teenagers. By the end of the day, 7×3 winners who will go on to the final in Hasselt in early May will be announced with pomp and circumstance.
