Een veelgehoorde vraag tijdens de recente Open Monumentendag (OMD) op 13 september was: wat heeft een hedendaags kunstencentrum als Vooruit in godsnaam met het OMD-thema “zorg” te maken, dat vooral wordt geassocieerd met armenhuizen, hospitalen of psychiatrische instellingen? Goede vraag, in dit video-interview van Vooruit beantwoord door Hendrik Defoort (STAM), kenner van de socialistische beweging in België en Europa:

A question that was often asked at this year’s Heritage Day on the 13th of September was: what does a contemporary arts centre like Vooruit have to do with the Heritage Day theme ‘care’, which is usually associated with poorhouses, hospitals and mental institutions? Good question! STAM’s Hendrik Defoort, expert on the socialist movement in Belgium and Europe, responds in this video interview.

Het voormalige volkshuis Vooruit, gebouwd in 1913, was indertijd het paradepaard van de Gentse socialistische beweging die ernaar streefde van wieg tot graf zorg te dragen voor de arbeidersfamilies; van een kraambedfonds over spaarvoordelen tot een levensverzekering. (Lees verder over dit thema.)

The former people’s palace Vooruit, built in 1913, was once the pride of the Ghent socialist movement, which strived to take care of working class families from the cradle to the grave, setting up a maternity fund, providing saving bonuses and offering life insurance.

Maar er was meer. De slogan “Kunst veredelt” in de grote Theaterzaal geeft al aan dat de socialistische beweging niet enkel hamerde op materiële welvaart, maar via de theater-, muziek- en filmvoorstellingen in Vooruit ook zorg wou dragen voor het geestelijk welzijn van haar mensen. En dan duikt een andere vraag op: wat heeft Vooruit nog met zijn geschiedenis, met een leidmotief als “Kunst veredelt”? De vraag stellen is ze (willen) beantwoorden.

But there was more. The slogan ‘Art Ennobles’ in Vooruit’s grand Theaterzaal indicates that the socialist movement did not solely focus on material well-being, but also wanted to cultivate the mind with stage productions, music and film. This gives rise to another question: what does the Vooruit arts centre have in common with its former function and the slogan ‘Art Ennobles’?

In de aanloop naar 100 jaar Vooruit (én 30 jaar Kunstencentrum) in 2013 gaan Vooruit en de vakgroep Nieuwste Geschiedenis van de UGent zich uitgebreid over die vraag buigen. Betekende de opstart van het kunstencentrum eind 1982 de totale breuk met de intenties van het socialistische volkshuis, of is de continuïteit met de geschiedenis van voor 1982 groter dan vele tijdgenoten het toen (en nu) ervoeren? In 2013 mag u zich uiteraard verwachten aan een verjaardagsfeest, maar hoort u ook een uitgebreider antwoord.

Running up to Vooruit’s 100th anniversary (and the 30th anniversary of the Vooruit Arts Centre) in 2013, Vooruit and the Department of Contemporary History at Ghent University will dig into this question in detail. Did the creation of the arts centre in late 1982 signify a radical breakaway from the values of the original socialist community centre, or are the parallels with the period preceding 1982 greater than many of our contemporaries suspected back then (and now)? When 2013 comes around, expect a big party and a detailed answer!
