Vooruit-exe

Zuid-Afrika is niet meteen de beste plaats om naar toe te trekken als het bij ons zomert, want jawel… dan is het daar winter. Toch was ik even daar op uitnodiging van het National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. Dat is echt helemaal in het zuiden van het immense land en meteen is het ook het grootste fesitval van het Afrikaanse continent, met veel dans en theater, muziek, conferenties, kleurrijke optochten en dies meer.

South Africa is not exactly the best place to travel when summer is in full swing in these parts, as you’ll arrive in the middle of South African winter. Nevertheless, I had been invited by the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. Grahamstown is situated in the south of this immense country and hosts the biggest festival on the African continent, featuring performing arts, music, conferences, colourful parades and lots more.

Hoe groot het aanbod ook was, een Westerse programmeur vindt er moeilijk zijn weg doorheen. Elke dag leek volgestouwd met wel 50 evenementen waarvan de ene naam nog bevreemdender in de oren klonk dan de andere. Veel projecten waren me dan ook veel te exotisch (let wel: niet oninteressant in de Zuid-Afrikaanse context, maar niet onmiddellijk relevant voor een Europees publiek). Wel werd ik van mijn sokken geblazen door het werk van Brett Bailey (zie foto onder van Blood Diamonds) en de in Europa al iets bekendere Mpumelo Paul Grootboom.

Despite the copious offer, it was difficult for a Western programmer to find his bearings here. Each day was filled to the brim with at least 50 events, the names of which were often bewildering. Many of the projects were slightly too exotic – having their merits in South African culture, of course, but not exactly relevant to a European audience). I was, however, bowled over by Brett Bailey’s work (see image of Blood Diamonds below) and Mpumelo Paul Grootboom, whose name already rings a bell in Europe.

Verder bracht de zomer ondermeer een uistap naar Groningen, naar het onvolprezen Noorderzonfestival. Het festival dat enkele jaren geleden al voor het eerst het werk van Nature Theater of Oklahoma naar Europa bracht, staat garant voor een frisse aanpak voor ene zo breed mogelijk publiek. Dat was ook nu zo, al stak een razend onweer een stokje voor de openingsavond… Alles is daar namelijk in open lucht of in tenten te doen… Dit najaar staat er nog een trip naar het Meteor Festival in Bergen op het programma. Daarover later meer.

I also visited Groningen this summer, for the unsurpassed Noorderzon festival. The festival introduced Nature Theater of Oklahoma in Europa a few years back and is known for its fresh approach for the widest possible audience. The festival lived up to expectations, although the opening night was disrupted by a storm – the festival takes place in open air and tents… This autumn, we will be making a trip to the Meteor Festival in Mons.
