Vlak naast Vooruit ligt de Waalse Krook, een site die er al jaren verloederd bij ligt. Na veel dromen en plannen is er met het project De Krook een bevlogen voorstel gelanceerd om er een multimediale site te ontwikkelen, die o.m. een nieuwe stedelijke bibliotheek en het Centrum voor Nieuwe Media zou huisvesten. De website www.dewaalsekrook.be en de pas geopende tentoonstelling ‘De Krook: een nieuw baken voor Gent’ leggen dat voorstel voor aan de Gentenaars en andere geïnteresseerden.

Right next to Vooruit you will find De Waalse Krook, a derelict site that has been abandoned for years. After years of dreaming and planning, an inspired project has been proposed to develop a multimedia site here called De Krook, with a new city library and the Centrum voor Nieuwe Media (Centre for New Media). The project is introduced to Ghent’s inhabitants and people interested on the website www.dewaalsekrook.be and the recently opened exhibition ‘De Krook: een nieuw baken voor Gent’.

Het project De Krook is een initiatief van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, de Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, de Stad Gent, het AG Stadsontwikkelingsbedrijf Gent (SOB), de Universiteit Gent en het Interdisciplinair Instituut voor Breedbandtechnologie (IBBT). Die 6 partners zouden nog in het najaar 2008 beslissen of ze doorgaan met het project.

The Krook project is an initiative by the Flemish Community, the Province of East Flanders, the City of Ghent, the AG Stadsontwikkelingsbedrijf Ghent (Office for Urban Development Ghent), Ghent University and IBBT- The Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology. These six partners will decide in late 2008 whether the project will be further developed.

De vzw Waalse Krook coördineert de inspanningen om het project te realiseren. Gents ereburgemeester Frank Beke is voorzitter van die vzw, Vooruitdirecteur Stefaan De Ruyck is afgevaardigd bestuurder. Op de officiële voorstelling van De Krook noteerde De Gentenaar (KVK, gepubliceerd 06/11/08): “Beke beklemtoonde dat het een echt stadsproject moet worden, waarin de Gentenaars zich herkennen. Zolang er wijzigingen mogelijk zijn, zal er met de opmerkingen worden rekening gehouden. Daarom ook zijn er lezingen, een expositie en een website waarop het publiek zich kan uitspreken.”

The Waalse Krook vzw coordinates the efforts to make this project happen. Ghent’s honorary mayor Frank Beke is the chairman of the vzw, and Vooruit’s director Stefaan De Ruyck is its delegated director. At the official presentation of De Krook, local newspaper De Genternaar (KVK, published 06/11/2008) reported that: “Beke emphasized that this has to be a real city project, which Ghent’s inhabitants can identify with. As long as changes can be made, we will take people’s comments into account. That’s the point of the lectures, the exhibition and the website, where the audience can have its say.”

De Waalse Krook droomt ervan een bibliotheek-van-morgen te installeren als een “leefkamer van de stad”, en verwijst daarbij naar inspirerende voorbeelden in het buitenland: de bib in Boston, Beeld en Geluid in Hilversum, OBA in Amsterdam, de bib van Stockholm, de koninklijke bib in Kopenhagen en de bib van Malmö. Het divers publiek van de bib in de multimediasite zou in het Centrum voor Nieuwe Media in contact komen met de jongste ontwikkelingen op het vlak van ICT.

Daarnaast heeft de Waalse Krook de wens uitgesproken om het nog op te richten Vlaams Instituut voor Archivering naar Gent te halen. Daarover noteerde De Gentenaar (KVK, 06/11/08) de volgende uitspraak van gedeputeerde Jozef Dauwe (Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen): “Wij hebben altijd gezegd dat wij alleen wilden participeren als het project een bovenlokaal belang zou hebben. Het multimediacentrum overstijgt het Gentse niveau, zeker als daar het Vlaams Instituut voor Archivering bij komt. Die trein mogen we niet missen.”

Apart from that, the Waalse Krook has also expressed the wish to bring the future Vlaams Instituut voor Archivering (Flemish Institute for Archiving) to Ghent. De Gentenaar (KVK, 06/11/2008) published the following quote by Jozef Dauwe (Province of East Flanders): “We have always said that we only wanted to participate if the project would have an impact outside of Ghent. The multimedia centre definitely transcends the local level, even more so if we could add the Vlaams Institute voor Archivering to that. We cannot miss this fantastic opportunity.”

“Volgens minister Bert Anciaux”, schreef De Standaard (GVdS, 06/11/08), “ligt er een sterk inhoudelijk project op tafel. Toch waarschuwde hij voor misplaatst enthousiasme. ‘De formele beslissingen volgen eind dit jaar. De juridische structuur ook. We weten bovendien nog niet hoe het project er zal uitzien. Pas in de zomer van 2009 komt er een open oproep voor architectuurbureaus, die met een masterplan en ontwerp van nieuwbouw voor de pinnen moeten komen’. Maar ondanks die vraagtekens is er intussen wel een duidelijk scenario voorhanden. De bibliotheek en het multimediacentrum worden ingebed in een stedenbouwkundig totaalconcept. De Krook moet de circusbuurt nieuw leven inblazen met kantoren, handelszaken, appartementen en horeca. Daarbij is het essentieel dat het circus behouden blijft en een nieuwe bestemming krijgt. Aan het beschermde stadsgezicht zal niet geraakt worden.”

“According to Flemish minister Bert Anciaux,” wrote De Standaard (GVds, 6/11/2008), this is a very strong project. He did, nevertheless, warn us not to get too enthusiastic just yet. ‘Formal decisions will be made at the end of the year. The legal structure will also be announced. On top of that, we don’t even know what the project will look like yet. It’s only in June 2009 that we will launch an open call for architecture firms to come up with a master plan and a building design.’ But in spite of all these unanswered questions, there is a clear strategy now. The library and the multimedia centre will be integrated in an urban development master plan. De Krook has to bring new life to the Circus area with offices, small businesses, flats, bars and restaurants. But it is absolutely essential that the Circus is maintained and gets a new function. We have to safeguard this conservation area.

Nota bene: het “Bouwblok bestaand” maakt geen deel uit van het project De Krook; “Bouwblok reconversie” zal een gemengde invulling krijgen (horeca, (klein)handel, kantoren, wonen en het archiveringsinstituut); in “Bouwblok nieuw” zou de nieuwe stedelijke bibliotheek komen en het Centrum voor Nieuwe Media; de gearceerde delen zijn publieke ruimte.
