After Almost Cinema
Oktober stond in het teken van de derde editie van Almost Cinema. De samenwerking met het Filmfestival Gent bestaat al langer maar sinds we Almost Cinema lanceerden, komen we met een duidelijker geprofileerd programma naar buiten. Basisidee is om kunstenaars te presenteren die niet of niet in de eerste plaats filmmaker zijn, maar die hun roots hebben in mediakunst, muziek en podiumkunst en van daaruit werk formuleren dat gerelateerd is met film of de cinemawereld.
In October, Vooruit hosted the third edition of Almost Cinema. We have been working with the Ghent Film Festival for longer, but since we launched Almost Cinema, the programme has a clear profile. The basic idea is to present artists who are not, or not primarily, filmmakers, but who have their roots in media art, music, theatre and dance, and formulate work that is related to film or the world of cinema from this perspective.

De pilaren van het programma zijn een installatieparcours, dat zich door het gebouw slingert, en een live programma op de podia. Het installatieparcours bood plaats aan acht werken, stuk voor stuk Belgische premières; het werk van Alexandra Dementieva was een volledig nieuwe creatie.
The pillars of the festival are the installation trail, which meanders through the building, and a live programme on stage. The installation trail showed eight works, every one of them shown in Belgium for the first time; Alexandra Dementieva’s piece was a brand-new creation.
Een van de absolute ontdekkingen was Viewmaster van Heike Langsdorf, Ula Sickle en Laurent Liefooghe (resp. 2 choreografen en een beeldend kunstenaar). Een in theatercontext vaak gebruikte optische illusie uit de negentiende eeuw, vormt het vertrekpunt voor een fascinerend hedendaags werk. Viewmaster bestond al als performance, voor Almost Cinema werd het werk herdacht/omgebouwd om ook als installatie te functioneren – het werd enthousiast onthaald door het publiek. We beslisten al om in 2010 opnieuw samen te werken met Heike Langsdorf en haar collectief C&H. Ze denken na over een live creatie die een dialoog zal vormen met een film in een cinemazaal.
One of the absolute discoveries was Viewmaster by Heike Langsdorf, Ula Sickle en Laurent Liefooghe (2 choreographers and a visual artist). A theatrical optical illusion often used in the nineteenth century formed the starting point for this fascinating contemporary work. Viewmaster was already a performance, but for Almost Cinema the work was reconceived/converted to work as an installation – and it was enthusiastically received by the audience. We have already decided to work with Heike Langsdorf and her collective C&H again in 2010. They are working on a live creation that will form a dialogue with a film in a cinema.
Een uitblinker in het live programma kwam van de Nederlandse jonge kunstenaars Rikkert Brok en Maarten Halmans. Het vorige werk van het duo presenteerden we vorige zomer in het nieuwe zomerproject van Vooruit, SMAK en 5voor12: Electrified. Hun nieuwe audiovisuele creatie Shift beleefde zijn Belgische premiere op Almost Cinema en was een tactiel werk dat de toeschouwer niet cinematografisch overdonderde maar een serene verwenning van oor en oog betekende.
An absolute highlight in the live programme was the performance by young Dutch artists Rikkert Brok and Maarten Halmans. We presented their previous work last summer, at Electrified, the new project by Vooruit, SMAK (Ghent Municipal Museum for Modern Art) and 5voor12. Shift, their new audiovisual creation had its Belgian premiere at Almost Cinema and was a tangible work that did not cinematically overwhelm the viewer, but presented a serene treat for eyes and ears.
