Vooruit en het Filmfestival Gent presenteren met trots de derde Almost Cinema. Van 7 tot 18 oktober slingert er zich opnieuw een installatieparcours door Vooruit (tot in de ex-snoepwinkel vlak naast Vooruit), tonen we een reeks performances die schuren langs cinema en staan er concerten, talks en een symposium (‘mutating media’) op het programma.

Vooruit and the Ghent Film Festival proudly present the third edition of Almost Cinema! From the 7th to the 18th of October you can explore the installation trail making its way through the Vooruit building (and into the former candy shop next to Vooruit), enjoy performances indebted to cinema and concerts, talks and a conference (‘mutating media’).

OPENING

We springen erin op 7 oktober met de muziekdocumentaire Young@Heart. Regisseur Stephen Walker maakte een werkelijk ontroerend verslag over een groep bejaarden die leven om te zingen en zingen om te leven. Walker zal zelf aanwezig zijn om de film in te leiden. We gingen op zoek naar een live match als opwarmer voor Young@Heart en stootten op zangeres Erika Stucky die met haar groep even onverwachte ‘covers’ neerzet als het Young@Heart koor.

OPENING NIGHT

Kicking off the opening night of the Film Festival on Tuesday 7 October is the documentary Young@Heart. Director Stephen Walker made this heart-warming film about a chorus of pensioners who live to sing and sing to live. Walker will personally introduce the film. On our quest to find a live warm-up act for Young@Heart, we came across vocal artist Erika Stucky, whose covers are as unexpected as Young@Heart’s.

VERNISSAGE TENTOONSTELLING

Op 8 oktober openen we het installatieparcours officieel in aanwezigheid van de deelnemende kunstenaars. Almost Cinema brengt zeven artiesten samen die elk op afwijkende wijze met het medium cinema bezig zijn. Hun achtergronden zijn zeer uiteenlopend: van geluidskunstenaars over mensen die eerder hun strepen verdienden in de beeldende kunst tot artiesten die groot werden in de electronische kunst. In de installatie ‘OSC’ zet Duitser Ulf Langheinrich je perceptie van tijd en ruimte op z’n kop met een staaltje visuele misleiding. Boris Debackere neemt je letterlijk mee ‘on a journey far away from here’, zonder enig narratief verhaal word je stante pede opgezogen in het interactief werk ‘Probe’. De Russische Alexandra Dementieva presenteert een gloednieuwe installatie ‘Alien Space’, vertrekpunt voor het werk is haar fascinatie voor de evolutie in de mediaberichtgeving. In het dak van Vooruit (de antiekzolder) staat een sculptuur opgesteld van Laure Delamotte Legrand, het object vormt ‘de huid’, de cocon voor de compositie van Eric Thielemans. In de Snoepwinkel (nieuwe locatie) verwelkomen we twee jonge kunstenaars, Parisienne Elisa Pone met een letterlijk spetterende videoinstallatie en de in de VS wonende Iranees Ali Momeni. Momeni werkt niet met beeld of projectie. Hij vertelt zijn verhaal aan de hand van een speciaal gebouwde rookmachine en gloeilampen. Doris Kuwert ziet schoonheid in kleine bewegingen, meer dan een paar kapstokken heeft ze niet nodig om je in vervoering te brengen.

OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION

On the 8th of October we’ll open the installation trail in the presence of the featured artists. Almost Cinema brings together seven artists, each of them working with the cinematic medium in their own unique way. They come from diverse backgrounds, ranging from sound artists to people who have earned their stripes in the visual arts, to people who have made it big on the electronic arts scene. In his installation ‘OSC’, German artist Ulf Langheinrich turns around your perception of time and space with a game of visual deception. Boris Debackere literally takes you on a journey far away from here. You become wholly absorbed by his interactive work Probe, which lacks any form of narrative. Russian artist Alexandra Dementieva will present her brand new installation, ‘Alien Space’. The starting point for this piece is Dementieva’s fascination for the evolution of media coverage. Right under Vooruit’s roof you’ll find a sculpture by Laure Delamotte Legrand: an object that forms the skin or the cocoon for Eric Thielemans’s composition. In the candy shop (new location) we’ll receive two young artists: the Parisian Elisa Pone will show a quite literally sparkling video installation and Iranian-born U.S. resident Ali Momeni. Momeni does not work with images or projection. He tells his story with the help of a purpose-built smoke machine and light bulbs. Doris Kuwert finds beauty in small movements and doesn’t need more than a few coat hangers to enchant you.

LIVE PERFORMANCES

Enkele artiesten uit het parcours presenteren ook live werk voor Almost Cinema. Op woensdag 8 oktober ontvangen we u graag in de Theaterzaal voor Drift, de cinematografische live performance van Ulf Langheinrich (bekend van zijn electronische kunstduo Granular Synthesis), in het kader van de vernissage, om 20:00, gratis. En we moedigen u ook aan om Viewmaster te beleven, de verbeeldingprikkelende performance van Heike Langsdorf en Ula Sickle in een sculptuur van Laurent Liefooghe, eveneens gratis op de avond van de vernissage, om 21:00 en 22:00 in de Dansstudio. De week daarna staat o.a. Ali Momeni in het live programma samen met de Amerikaanse componist David Bithell voor een heerlijk stukje “table Music”: The Liminal Surface.

LIVE PERFORMANCES

Several artists from the trail will also present live work during Almost Cinema.. On Wednesday the 8th of October, join us in the Theaterzaal for Drift, a cinematic live performance by Ulf Langheinrich (known from the electronic art duo Granular Synthesis), part of the exhibition’s opening, at 8 p.m., free admission. We would also like to encourage you to experience Viewmaster, a performance that stirs the imagination by Heike Langsdorf and Ula Sickle in a construction by Laurent Liefooghe, free admission on the exhibition’s opening night, at 9 p.m. and at 10 p.m. in the Dance studio. The week after that Ali Momeni will be performing live together with American composer David Bithell for a wonderful piece of table music: The Liminal Surface.

Drift

Almost Cinema legt niet alleen de link met mediakunst maar ook met podiumkunsten. Vorig jaar werd het hart van menig bezoeker gestolen door de flipbookperformance van Berlijnse fotograaf/wereldreiziger Volker Gerling. Met You and me together. My First… van Siegmar Zacharias (SXS Enterprise) menen we een waardige opvolger klaar te hebben. Uw eerste keren worden weer nieuw aan de hand van deze charmante voorstelling.

Almost Cinema does not only make the connection with media arts. Last year, the hearts of many a Vooruit visitor were stolen by Berlin photographer/world traveller Volker Gerling’s flip book performance. We think we’ve found a worthy follow-up with You and me together, My first by Siegmar Zacharias (SXS Enterprise). Relive you first times with this enchanting performance.

Een spannende combinatie muziek en beeld wordt gegarandeerd met de double bill Chopsticks en Zu. Chopsticks is een lokaal geënt project rond Mathias Vandewiele waarbij een visueel luik werd uitgewerkt door Dagmar Duportail. De Italiaanse beeldend kunstenares Carola Spadoni werkte al eerder met het improvtrio Zu voor een installatiewerk. Voor Almost Cinema brengen ze nieuw werk zowel in beeld als muziek.

The Chopsticks and Zu double bill promises an exciting evening. Chopsticks is a local project led by Mathias Vandewiele, with a visual chapter devised by Dagmar Duportail. Italian visual artist Carola Spadoni already worked with the improv trio for an installation piece. At Almost Cinema they’ll present new musical and visual work.

Naast deze voorstellingen zijn er ook een aantal te ontdekken korte performances die geweven zijn doorheen het ganse festival. Weet dat de plaatsen voor W(Double U) van Crew en Think to me van Mike Michiels zeer beperkt zijn (het zijn one-on-one performances), u kan reserveren via onze site of via het bespreekbureau om een plaats vast te leggen.

Apart from these shows, you can also discover a couple of short performances woven through the festival. Please note that seats for Crew’s W(Double U) and Mike Michiels’s Think to me are limited (both being one on one performances), you can book tickets on our website or at the box office.

GESPREKKEN

Er wordt opnieuw plaats geruimd voor gesprekken over (bijna) cinema. Op donderdag 9 oktober zijn we op tijd wakker voor het symposium Mutating Media. Net als vorig jaar slaan we de handen in elkaar met Interface (het interdisciplinair academisch platform van KASK, UGent, VUB & Universiteit Utrecht) om een dag in elkaar te boksen waar academici én kunstenaars als sprekers te gast zijn. Met speciale dank aan Robrecht Vanderbeeken en Jonas Tavernier.

TALKS

Once again, we’ll make room for talks about (almost) cinema. On Thursday the 9th of October we’ll rise early for the Mutating Media conference. Just like last year, we’ll join forces with Interface (the interdisciplinary academic platform of the KASK (Ghent Royal Academy of Fine Arts), Ghent University, the Free University of Brussels & the University of Utrecht to give artists and academics a chance to speak at this conference. With special thanks to Robrecht Vanderbeeken and Jonas Tavernier.

Mutating media

Op woensdag 15 oktober is er een FrictiesSalonDeluxe. Deluxe omdat niet één maar 4 makers hun project uit de doeken komen doen en omdat het artiesten zijn met wie we een parcours afleggen in Vooruit. Alexis Destoop bouwt aan een nieuw werk Kairos waarin Australische landschappen de hoofdrol spelen en waarin er een meer dan gewone inbreng is van de muzikanten Oren Ambarchi en Stephen O’Malley. The Pitch is een performance vermomd als lezing van Anna Rispoli en Christophe Meierhans. Onderwerp van het project is een remake van een Amerikaanse western met een Soedanese cast! Anna Rispoli was met haar gezelschap Zimmerfrei al eens te gast in Almost Cinema 07. Christophe Meierhans zette eerder dit jaar tijdens Courtisane festival het mooie Pirates of the Carribean neer met de groep C&H. Derde gast in het Salon is Philipp Warnell, hij komt zijn nieuwste filmproject toelichten. Warnell was twee jaar geleden in Vooruit tijdens Homo Futuris waarbij hij een film op zijn ooglens projecteerde.

On Wednesday the 15th of October we’ll have a FrictiesSalonDeluxe. We’re calling it Deluxe because not one, but 4 artists will elaborate on their projects and because they’re artists who we’ll follow through the Vooruit building. Alexis Destoop is busy with the construction of new work Kairos, which is dominated by Australian landscapes, while giving ample attention to musicians Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O’Malley. The Pitch by Anna Rispoli and Christophe Meierhans is a performance disguised as a lecture. Subject of the project is a remake of an American western with a Sudanese cast! Anna Rispoli and her company Zimmerfrei were guests at Almost Cinema 07. You could catch Christophe Meierhans at this year’s Courtisane festival, where he performed the beautiful Pirates of the Caribbean with the C&H group. Third guest in the Salon is Philipp Warnell, who’ll talk about his new film project. Two years ago, Warnell was a guest at Vooruit’s Homo Futuris festival, where he projected a film on his eye lens.

Op donderdag 16 oktober zorgt Toestanden onder de noemer Onze Jongens in Afghanistan voor een nagesprek bij Nacht vor Augen. A Hero’s Welcome (DE, 2008), een naar de keel grijpende film over een soldaat die dolgedraaid terugkeert uit Afghanistan. Zegden al toe om mee te debatteren: Brigitte Maria Bertels, de regisseur van de film; Kees Rietveld, Afghanistan-kenner (onder de Russische bezetting werkte hij in Afghanistan als arts, onder de Taliban als coördinator van de Europese Commissie, later als observator voor de Verenigde Staten); UGent-professor Ruddy Doom van de Vakgroep Studie van de Derde Wereld en moderator Bert De Vroey van VRT Radio 1. Hebben nog niet bevestigd: Federaal defensieminister Pieter De Crem en oorlogsjournalist Arnold Karskens.

On Thursday the 16th of October, Vooruit’s critical forum will organize the debate Onze Jongens in Afghanistan (Our Boys in Afghanistan) following the film Nacht vor Augen. A Hero’s welcome (DE, 2008), which tells the gripping story of a soldier who returns from Afganistan with PTSD. Joining the debate are: Brigitte Maria Bertels, the film’s director; Kees Rietveld, Afghanistan expert (a doctor under the Russian occupation, a coordinator for the European Commission under the Taliban and an observer for the U.S. later); Ruddy Doom, professor at Ghent University, Department of Third World Studies and moderator Bert De Vroey of VRT’s Radio 1. Other guests that have not yet confirmed: Federal Minister for Defence Pieter De Crem and war correspondent Arnold Karskens.

Op vrijdag 17 oktober, tenslotte, geven we het woord aan Filmfestival-Gent-jurylid Arne Sierens. Sierens (theaterregisseur en roerganger van Compagnie Cecilia) zal filmles geven aan Jos Gheysels (Minister van Staat). Hij dook in de filmgeschiedenis en selecteerde zijn absoluut favoriete filmfragmenten (en we verzekeren u, het zijn ronduit indrukwekkende scènes). In de hem kenmerkende flamboyante stijl wil hij gesprekspartner Jos Geysels overtuigen van zijn groot gelijk. Verrassingen zijn hierbij niet uitgesloten…

Finally, on Friday the 17th of October, Arne Sierens, member of the Ghent Film Festival jury, will take the stage. Sierens, stage director and head of Compagnie Cecilia, will talk movies with Jos Gheysels (Minister of State). He delved in film history and selected his favourite movie moments ever (and we can assure you that he’s chosen some impressive fragments). In his typical flamboyant style, he tries to convince Jos Geysels of his choice. Expect some surprises…
