Een najaar vol residenties / Residencies in the autumn
Vooruit heeft een Januskop! Aan de ene kant is er de zichtbare bedrijvigheid: concerten, voorstellingen, lezingen, toestanden, installaties, cafépraat. Maar er is ook een andere kant, een kant die al die bedrijvigheid voorbereidt. Dat zijn uiteraard de werknemers van Vooruit zelf, maar meer nog de vele artiesten die voortdurend in één van de 4 studio’s aan het werken is aan nieuw werk. In het najaar van 2008 is dat niet anders. Zo werkt choreograaf Ugo Dehaes in september in de dansstudio aan zijn nieuwe voorstelling Forces, op 5 en 6 februari 09 te zien in Vooruit. Wie niet zo lang kan wachten, kan tijdens het Openingsweekend (van 1 t.e.m. 4 oktober) al een tipje van de sluier gelicht zien. Dan brengt Ugo met Gemma Higginbottom (o.a. danseres bij Kris Verdonck) al een toonmoment van het onderdeeltje van het project waar ze in Vooruit aan gewerkt hebben.
Vooruit has many faces. On the one hand, there is the apparent industriousness: concerts, performances, readings, debates, installations, bar talk. But there is also another side, a side that prepares all this industriousness. Of course, there’s Vooruit’s employees, but we’re talking about the artists that are working day and night to create new performances in one of Vooruit’s four studios. This is no different in the autumn of 2008. In September, choreographer Ugo Dehaes will work on his new performance Forces in the dance studio. Forces will be shown in Vooruit on 5 and 6 February 2009. If you can’t wait that long, you can catch a preview during our opening weekend (1 to 4 October). Ugo and Gemma Higginbotom (a dancer with Kris Verdonck) will perform a small piece of the project that they have been working on in Vooruit.

Ook een oude bekende in Vooruit is Diederik Peeters. Met zijn gevolg is hij momenteel druk aan het repeteren in onze Antiekzolder. Zijn voorstelling Thriller staat niet meteen op het programma, maar wat niet is kan nog komen. We zijn blij dat we op deze manier ons steentje kunnen bijdragen aan het project.
Diederik Pieters is another familiar face in Vooruit. He and his company are busy rehearsing in our Antiekzolder (Antiques attic). His project, Thriller, is not going on tour quite yet, but it will do so someday. We’re happy to contribute to his project this way.

In oktober werken de Spaanse choreograaf Carlos Pez (die o.a. samenwerkte met Vera Mantero) en de Ijslandse Erna Omarsdottir (nog bekend van bij Jan Fabre en PONI) voor een korte periode in onze studio’s. Een heel wat langere periode is de Franse choreografe Claire Croizé bij ons in huis. Na haar opgemerkte doortocht met de voorstelling Affected in 2007, werkt ze aan een nieuwe solo opnieuw op muziek van Gustav Mahler. Vooruit heeft zich als coproducent opgeworpen, samen met het Festival van Vlaanderen Gent. Momenteel trachten we de middelen te vinden om de muziek van Mahler live uit te laten voeren door het veertienkoppige ensemble Oxalys… De voorstelling zelf zal pas in première gaan in september 2009 in Vooruit.
In October, Spanish choreographer Carloz Pez (who has worked with Vera Mantero) and the Icelandic Erna Omarsdottir (who you might know from Jan Fabre and PONI) will work in our studios for a short time. But French choreographer Claire Croizé will be staying with us for a much longer period. After her memorable performance in 2007’s Affected, Croizé is working on a new solo, once again on the tones of Gustav Mahler. Vooruit will act as co-producer, together with the Ghent Flanders Festival. At the moment, we’re trying to find the means to have Mahler’s music performed live by the fourteen-piece ensemble Oxalys. The performance itself will only premiere at Vooruit in September 2009.
Midden november palmt de weergaloze Amerikaanse performer Davis Freeman een week onze domzaal in om er met goeie technische condities te kunnen repeteren. Later op het seizoen, in de derde week van maart 2009, komt hij dan terug om er zijn Saving Lies aan ons publiek voor te stellen.
In mid-November the unequalled American performer Davis Freeman will take up residence in our Domzaal, where he’ll be able to rehearse under good technical conditions. Later on in the season, in the third week of March 2009 to be precise, he will return to present his performance Saving Lies to our audience.
Tot slot is er nog Gaetan Bulourde. Deze performer werkte samen met Meg Stuart maar is vooral bezig met eigen performances, video, geluid en tekst. In Vooruit krijgt hij een residentie om er samen met de fantastische Antonia Baehr en Valérie Castan. Hij krijgt in december 14 dagen residentietijd en bereid in die tijd ook zijn interventie voor ons 1-avond-bijna-festival Korte Metten, op vrijdag 12 december 2008!
Finally, we have Gaetan Bulourde. This performer has collaborated with Meg Stuart, but mainly works on his own performances, videos, sound and texts. He’ll be a resident in Vooruit together with the fantastic Antonia Baehr and Valérie Castan. He’ll be staying for fourteen days in December, during which he will prepare his intervention for our one-night festival Korte Metten on Friday the 12th of December 2008!
