Wie in The Game is 2007 Velma Superstar zag, kent het bizarre drietal Velma uit het Zwitserse Lausanne al een beetje. Begonnen als rockgroep kregen ze al snel interesse in de theatrale kant van hun muzikale bezigheden. Met Rondo en Velma Superstar tonen ze hun unieke manier om muziek , scenografie en performance met elkaar te verzoenen. Daarbij vertrekken ze, wars van het meeste muziektheater, volledig vanuit de muziek en muzikale structuren. Die geven vorm, betekenis en inhoud aan het getoonde. Je kan bijna voelen dat hun eerste uitdrukkingsvorm toch steeds weer het concert blijkt. In hun nieuwste voorstelling Requiem is dat overduidelijk.

If you saw Velma Superstar at the Game in 2007, you’ll already know the bizarre trio Velma from Lausanne, Switzerland. Starting out as a rock band, they soon developed a taste for the theatrical side of their musical activities. In Rondo and Velma Superstar, they showcased their unique talent for welding music, scenography and performance. Unlike most musical theatre, they take music and musical structures as their starting point. This gives shape, meaning and content to what is shown. You can almost feel that their primary expression form remains the concert. This becomes crystal clear as you watch their newest performance Requiem.

In Requiem speelt alles zich af in wat lijkt op de habitat van Velma: de opnamestudio. De grens tussen muziek maken, wachten en discussiëren lossen er op in groteske theatraliteit. De repetitiestudio is op die manier ook een ruimte weg van de ‘echte’ wereld daarbuiten. Een tussenfase die nog eens beklemtoond wordt door de voorstelling op te hangen aan de muzikale structuur van het Requiem. Het Requiem als een poging om de ziel te doen overleven, om de dood te overwinnen en onsterfelijk te worden. Gedachten die in de repetitieruimte uitdrukkelijk aanwezig zijn, die al te menselijke drang om een spoor, iets wezenlijks achter te laten…

In Requiem, the scene unfurls in what seems to be Velma’s natural habitat: the recording studio. The line between making music, waiting and talking dissolves in grotesque reality. From this point of view, the rehearsal studio is a space that’s away from the real world outside. A transitional phase that is emphasized by the fact that the performance is devised around the musical structure of a Requiem. The Requiem: a way for the soul to survive, to conquer death and to become immortal. Thoughts that are tangible in the rehearsal space, that all too human desire to make a lasting impression, to leave behind something essential.

Nog in het Openingsweekend hebben we Alexandra Bachzetsis, Lies Vanborm en Tina Bleuler te gast. Met hun gezelschap Company nemen ze de choreografische en dramatische mogelijkheden van sociale contexten onder loep. Daarbij speelt de populaire cultuur in zijn diverse verschijningsvormen steeds weer een voorname rol: hiphop in Gold, mainstream Hollywood narratie in Mainstream en Murder Mysteries, de codes van striptease in ‘Act’. In dat opzicht is Soirée, de nieuwe productie, het meest complexe sociale experiment totnogtoe. Met 13 danseressen op scène wordt de avond tot één grote soirée inclusief DJ’s die de muzikale score voortdurend live voortstuwen.

Company, their troupe, takes a closer look at the choreographic and dramatic possibilities of social contexts. Popular culture in all its forms plays an essential role: hip hop in Gold, mainstream Hollywood narration in Mainstream and Murder Mysteries, and the codes of striptease in Act. In this light, Soirée, their newest production, is their most complex social experiment to date. With 13 dancers on stage, the evening turns into a great party, with DJs constantly pushing the musical score forward.
