Nieuwe lift brengt je tot aan Domzaal / New lift up to the Domzaal

Tot enkele maanden geleden was de Domzaal de laatste publieke zaal van Kunstencentrum Vooruit die niet (comfortabel) toegankelijk was voor mindervaliden. Door de installatie van een platformlift is ook die zaal nu ontsloten.

Up until a few months ago, the Domzaal was the only public Vooruit hall that wasn’t (comfortably) accessible to wheelchair users. By installing a platform lift this hall has now become accessible too.

Waarom nu pas vlot bereikbaar? In geklasseerde monumenten botsen de hedendaagse normen voor toegankelijkheid en comfort soms op bouwkundige moeilijkheden. Pas sinds er zgn. platformliften op de markt zijn, kon de wens om alle bezoekers een vlotte toegang tot de Domzaal te geven omgezet in een concreet bouwproject. Het verschil tussen een platformlift en een klassieke lift is dat de eerste geen machinekamer boven de lift nodig, noch een holle ruimte onder de lift. Alle mechaniek zit ingebouwd in de liftconstructie zelf.

Why only accessible now? In historic buildings, modern accessibility and comfort norms often clash with construction difficulties. It’s only since the launch of platform lifts that our wish to guarantee all Vooruit visitors easy access to the Domzaal could become reality. The difference between a platform lift and a classic lift is that the former does not require an engine on top of the lift, nor a void space underneath it. The entire mechanism is integrated in the lift itself.

Financiering Bovendien lag de nadruk tijdens de restauratieperiode op het restaureren van het immense gebouw en was er vaak te weinig geld voorhanden om het gebouw aan te passen aan hedendaagse publieks- en artiestennoden. Dankzij de hulp van de Stad Gent, de Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen en de Vlaamse Gemeenschap is er voor de periode 2008-2013 een ambitieus 5-jarenplan opgesteld om het monumentale gebouw uit 1913 aan te passen aan de noden van 2013. De volgende jaren staan betere verluchting en koeling van alle zalen op het programma, evenals technische werkzaamheden die niet direct zichtbaar zullen zijn voor de bezoeker of artiest, maar broodnodig zijn voor een hedendaagse exploitatie van het gebouw (vb. vervanging hoogspanningscabine, uitbreiding gebouwbeheersysteem). Money On top of that, during the restoration works the emphasis was on restoring the immense building, and there was often not enough money to adapt the building to modern artist and audience needs. With the help of the City of Ghent, the Province of East Flanders and the Flemish Community, we’ve laid out a five-year plan for 2008-2013, which will bring the classic building up to modern standards. The following years we’ll improve the ventilation and cooling of each hall, as well as performing some technical works that will not be visible to the visitor or artist, but that are quintessential to the modern exploitation of the building (e.g. the replacement of the electrical enclosure, the expansion of the building management system).
