Vooruit en het Filmfestival Gent presenteren met trots de derde Almost Cinema. Van 7 tot 18 oktober slingert er zich opnieuw een installatieparcours door Vooruit (tot in de ex-snoepwinkel vlak naast Vooruit), tonen we een reeks performances die schuren langs cinema en staan er concerten, talks en een symposium (‘mutating media’) op het programma.

Vooruit and the Ghent Film Festival proudly present the third edition of Almost Cinema! From the 7th to the 18th of October you can explore the installation trail making its way through the Vooruit building (and into the former candy shop next to Vooruit), enjoy performances indebted to cinema and concerts, talks and a conference (‘mutating media’).

Sinds begin september is het Vooruit café uitgerust met (prototypes van) PressTo pagers: kleine doosjes die zijn uitgerust met draadloze technologie om je te signaleren dat je bestelde schotels klaarstaan op de toog. Zo hoeft niemand nog ongeduldig bij de toog op zijn bestelling te wachten. En PressTo blijkt niet alleen een handig ding voor onze cafébezoekers, maar ook voor onze barmedewerkers: dankzij PressTo kunnen ze piekmomenten merkbaar vlotter de baas.

Since early September our Café has been equipped with prototype PressTo pagers: little boxes with wireless technology that notify you when your food is ready to be picked up at the counter. That way, nobody ever has to wait impatiently at the counter again. Not only is PressTo convenient for our visitors, it also helps our bar staff to keep on top of things at busy times.

Drie jaar geleden startte Vooruit met de studentenwerking 5 for students. We vinden het belangrijk om een nieuw publiek te zoeken in de zich jaarlijks vernieuwende groep Gentse studenten. Daarnaast willen we door intens contact met een kleine (representatieve) groep studenten leren hoe we de studenten best een leidraad en gids bieden in de rijke Vooruitagenda.

Three years ago, Vooruit created the student project 5 for students. We think it’s important to find a new audience among the ever-changing student population. Apart from that, we also want to learn from a small, representative group of students how we can guide this young audience through Vooruit’s varied offer.

Vooruit heeft een Januskop! Aan de ene kant is er de zichtbare bedrijvigheid: concerten, voorstellingen, lezingen, toestanden, installaties, cafépraat. Maar er is ook een andere kant, een kant die al die bedrijvigheid voorbereidt. Dat zijn uiteraard de werknemers van Vooruit zelf, maar meer nog de vele artiesten die voortdurend in één van de 4 studio’s aan het werken is aan nieuw werk. In het najaar van 2008 is dat niet anders. Zo werkt choreograaf Ugo Dehaes in september in de dansstudio aan zijn nieuwe voorstelling Forces, op 5 en 6 februari 09 te zien in Vooruit. Wie niet zo lang kan wachten, kan tijdens het Openingsweekend (van 1 t.e.m. 4 oktober) al een tipje van de sluier gelicht zien. Dan brengt Ugo met Gemma Higginbottom (o.a. danseres bij Kris Verdonck) al een toonmoment van het onderdeeltje van het project waar ze in Vooruit aan gewerkt hebben.

Vooruit has many faces. On the one hand, there is the apparent industriousness: concerts, performances, readings, debates, installations, bar talk. But there is also another side, a side that prepares all this industriousness. Of course, there’s Vooruit’s employees, but we’re talking about the artists that are working day and night to create new performances in one of Vooruit’s four studios. This is no different in the autumn of 2008. In September, choreographer Ugo Dehaes will work on his new performance Forces in the dance studio. Forces will be shown in Vooruit on 5 and 6 February 2009. If you can’t wait that long, you can catch a preview during our opening weekend (1 to 4 October). Ugo and Gemma Higginbotom (a dancer with Kris Verdonck) will perform a small piece of the project that they have been working on in Vooruit.

Wie in The Game is 2007 Velma Superstar zag, kent het bizarre drietal Velma uit het Zwitserse Lausanne al een beetje. Begonnen als rockgroep kregen ze al snel interesse in de theatrale kant van hun muzikale bezigheden. Met Rondo en Velma Superstar tonen ze hun unieke manier om muziek , scenografie en performance met elkaar te verzoenen. Daarbij vertrekken ze, wars van het meeste muziektheater, volledig vanuit de muziek en muzikale structuren. Die geven vorm, betekenis en inhoud aan het getoonde. Je kan bijna voelen dat hun eerste uitdrukkingsvorm toch steeds weer het concert blijkt. In hun nieuwste voorstelling Requiem is dat overduidelijk.

If you saw Velma Superstar at the Game in 2007, you’ll already know the bizarre trio Velma from Lausanne, Switzerland. Starting out as a rock band, they soon developed a taste for the theatrical side of their musical activities. In Rondo and Velma Superstar, they showcased their unique talent for welding music, scenography and performance. Unlike most musical theatre, they take music and musical structures as their starting point. This gives shape, meaning and content to what is shown. You can almost feel that their primary expression form remains the concert. This becomes crystal clear as you watch their newest performance Requiem.

Tijdens het Openingsweekend presenteren maar liefst drie artiesten/groepen hun nieuwe CD in Vooruit: Tribe (The Tribe Band), Kiss The Anus of a Black Cat (Stef Heeren) en Jóhann Jóhannsson.

No less than three artists/bands will present their albums in Vooruit during our opening weekend: Tribe (The Tribe Band), Kiss The Anus of a Black Cat (Stef Heeren) and Jóhann Jóhannsson.

In 2007 ontving Vooruit van de Vlaamse minister van Cultuur de Prijs voor Algemene Culturele Verdienste. Daar hing een cheque van 20.000 euro aan vast. Vooruit besliste om het geld niet in de eigen werking te investeren, maar op zoek te gaan naar een artistieke project in de stad waaraan het bedrag kon worden besteed. Dit project werd ons geleverd door Peter Vermeersch (componist/muzikant Flat Earth Society).

In 2007, Vooruit was awarded the Prize for Cultural Merit by the Flemish Minister of Culture. This meant that we received a cheque worth € 20,000. Vooruit decided not to invest the prize money in its own projects, but to look for an artistic project in the city that the money would go to. Eventually, we chose a project by Peter Vermeersch (composer/musician with Flat Earth Society).

Na een verkenning van de Finse muziekscene in 07 organiseren Vooruit en Etoiles Polaires vzw een derde editie van het muziekfestival Etoiles Polaires rond artiesten uit Montréal, van 3 t.e.m. 6 december 08. (Zie ook vorige post van mei 08: Etoiles Polaires 08 zal focussen op Montréal.) Het wordt geen complete staalkaart van wat Montréal te bieden heeft, hopelijk wel een treffend sfeerbeeld van de muziekstad Montréal en een voorschot op de nieuwe golf pop- en rockartiesten die in eigen land zijn doorgebroken en nu resoluut hun weg naar Europa zoeken: Wolf Parade, Land of Talk, The Stills, Plants and Animals, Think about Life, Hot Springs,…

After exploring the Finnish music scene in 07, Vooruit and Etoiles Polaires vzw will organise a third edition of the Etoiles Polaires music festival with artists from Montréal from the 3rd to the 6th of October (Remember our post in May 08: Etoiles Polaires zal focussen op Montréal). We won’t be able to offer you a complete sampling of Montréal’s music scene, but hopefully, we’ll be able to give you a good idea of Montréal as a music city. We’ll introduce you to a wave of young pop and rock artist who have made it in their home country and are now looking to repeat this success in Europe: Wolf Parade, Land of Talk, The Stills, Plants and Animals, Think about Life, Hot Springs, etc.

Tot enkele maanden geleden was de Domzaal de laatste publieke zaal van Kunstencentrum Vooruit die niet (comfortabel) toegankelijk was voor mindervaliden. Door de installatie van een platformlift is ook die zaal nu ontsloten.

Up until a few months ago, the Domzaal was the only public Vooruit hall that wasn’t (comfortably) accessible to wheelchair users. By installing a platform lift this hall has now become accessible too.
