In een wereld van steeds toenemende technologische complexiteit wordt er tegenwoordig veel aandacht besteed aan innovatieve interactietechnieken tussen mens en computer. Nieuwe computerinterfaces worden daardoor geschikter voor gebruik in verschillende contexten en door een bredere doorsnede van de bevolking. Het project Multi-Media Multi-touch Table (MuTable) dat Kunstencentrum Vooruit leidt, met steun van het ICT- onderzoekscentrum IBBT, wil multi-touchtechnologie ontwikkelen tot op een niveau waarop ze in openbare ruimtes zoals musea en bibliotheken kan worden gebruikt. In a world where technology seems to be getting ever more complex, innovative interaction techniques between man and computer are becoming increasingly popular. These new techniques make new computer interfaces more suitable for different environments and accessible to a wider audience. p(english). The Multi-Media Multi-touch Table (MuTable) project, conducted by Vooruit Arts Centre in association with ICT research centre IBBT, wants to develop multi-touch technology on a level that can be used in public places such as museums and libraries. Central to the MuTable are the multi-touch widgets that enable the user to almost physically manipulate digital media. The project was presented at IBBT’s Brokerage event on the 7th of May 2008. Dat kan dankzij zgn. multi-touch widgets die de gebruiker in staat stellen digitale media op een haast fysieke manier te manipuleren.

De MuTable is een soort “natuurlijke interface”: tactiel en intuïtief. Daardoor zal het minder technisch onderlegde mensen helpen om met rijke digitale media om te gaan op een eenvoudige maar krachtige manier. Natuurlijke interfaces ontwikkelen is essentieel voor het dichten van de digitale kloof. Vooruit en de partners van het MuTable-project geloven dan ook sterk in de maatschappelijke meerwaarde van de MuTable. Bibliotheken, musea, cultuurhuizen als Vooruit zullen gaandeweg nieuwe toepassingen voor die natuurlijke interfaces bedenken en integreren in hun publiekswerking. Daarnaast wordt er ook veel aandacht besteed aan de economische valorisatie van het project.

The MuTable is a sort of “natural interface”: tactile and intuitive. This will help less computer savvy individuals to handle rich digital media in a simple and effective way. Developing natural interfaces is key to bridging the digital divide. Vooruit and its partners in the MuTable project strongly believe in the project’s social value. Libraries, museums and arts centres like Vooruit will gradually find more applications for these natural interfaces and integrate them in their amenities. Also we will put much effort into adapting the project to a commercial environment.

Het consortium van dit project is evenwichtig samengesteld uit een aantal gebruikersorganisaties (zoals de universiteitsbibliotheek van UGent, STAM en Vooruit) en een aantal (kleine) technologiebedrijven (Artec, Ravi). Mogelijk kan het consortium nog uitgebreid worden.

The consortium consists of a number of organisations (such as the Ghent university library, STAM (the Ghent city museum) and Vooruit) and a selection of (small) technology companies (Artec, Ravi). New members may join the consortium in the future.
