Vooruit-exe

Vooruit stapt in 2008 opnieuw in enkele onderzoeksprojecten ondersteund door het ICT-onderzoeksinstituut IBBT. Eén van die projecten heet DEUS, het letterwoord voor Deployment and Easy Use of Wireless Services. Op het IBBT Brokerage Event op 7 mei 2008 werd informatie over dat project ter beschikking gesteld. In 2008, Vooruit will take part in several research projects in association with the IBBT research institute. One of these projects is DEUS, which stands for Deployment and Easy Use of Wireless Services. IBBT presented up to date information on this project on its Brokerage event on the 7th of May 2008. Binnen DEUS worden enkele demonstratoren gepland die de enorme toepassingsmogelijkheden van wireless sensornetwerken moeten aantonen. In regelmatig wisselende omgevingen, zoals een museum, kan er met eenvoudig op te zetten wireless netwerken een interactieve rondleiding worden aangeboden aan bezoekers. Een ander toepassingsgebied is mobiliteitsondersteuning voor ouderen in en rondom publieke plaatsen. In Vooruit zouden sensornetwerken nieuwe mogelijkheden scheppen voor rondleidingen doorheen het historische gebouw of door tijdelijke installatieparcours: een mobiel toestel (gsm, pda,...) weet waar het zich bevindt en geeft gelokaliseerde informatie door aan zijn gebruiker.

DEUS will feature a number of demonstrators establishing the numerous applications of wireless sensor networks. In frequently changing environments such as museums, an interactive tour could be offered thanks to an easily installed wireless network. Another area that the technology could be applied to is mobility assistance for the elderly in and around public places. In Vooruit, sensor networks would offer new possibilities for guided tours of the historic building or temporary exhibitions: a mobile device (mobile phone, PDA) can track its location and will give localized information to the user.

De technische kant van het verhaal: DEUS streeft naar de ontwikkeling van eenvoudig te beheren draadloze sensornetwerken, nieuwe draadloze mesh netwerken, positioneringtechnologie gebaseerd op lage-kost technologie en gebruikersinterfaces die de DEUS oplossing makkelijk installeerbaar en bruikbaar maken op maat van dynamische omgevingen.

The technical side of the story is that DEUS wishes to develop easily managed wireless networks, new wireless mesh networks, positioning technology based on low-cost technology and user interfaces that make sure DEUS is easily installed and used in a dynamic environment.

Dit onderzoek is o.m. een vervolg op het IBBT-project WBA (Wireless Building Automation), waar een sterke technologische basis werd gelegd op het vlak van sensornetwerken, positionering en in-building heterogene netwerken. (Zie verslag WBA-demodag op EXE)

This research project is a follow-up of IBBT’s WBA (Wireless Building Automation) project, in which a solid technological basis was laid in the field of sensor networks, positioning and in-building heterogeneous networks (see EXE’s WBA demo day report).

Aan het consortium uit WBA werden nieuwe partners uit de toepassingsgebieden toegevoegd (een signaal dat dit onderzoeksgebied zeer actueel is!). Het nieuwe consortium is evenwichtig samengesteld, met zowel een vertegenwoordiging van gebruikers (OCMW Gent, Erfgoedcentrum Lamot en Kunstencentrum Vooruit) en natuurlijk van de technologie ontwikkelaars (One Access, Televic, Greanpeak, 8ight Day, Alcatel-Lucent, Fifthplay, GEO Solutions, TeleAtlas).

New partners from different application areas have joined the consortium (proving that this is a hot research topic). The new consortium is well-balanced, with users (OCMW Ghent, Erfgoedcentrum Lamot, Vooruit Arts Centre) and technology developers (One Access, Televic, GreenPeak, 8ight Day, Alcatel Lucent, Fifthplay, GEO Solutions, TeleAtlas)
