Vooruit-exe

In december 2008 organiseren vzw Etoiles Polaires en Vooruit opnieuw een muziekfestival. Ditmaal zal de aandacht gaan naar de muziekscene van Montréal in Québec, Canada. We trokken naar Montréal om die scene grondig te verkennen.

In December 2008, Etoiles Polaires asbl/vzw and Vooruit will again be organizing a music festival. This time around, the focus will be on the music scene in Montreal in Quebec, Canada. We made the trip to Montreal to explore the ins and outs of that scene in detail.

Montréal doet in tegenstelling tot vele andere Canadese steden vrij Europees aan. Er is weinig hoogbouw en de brede avenues, kleine gezellige cafeetjes en eethuizen geven een gekende grootstedelijke look.

Unlike many other Canadian cities, Montreal has a real European feel to it. There are very few tall buildings and the wide avenues, small charming cafés and eateries lend it a familiar big-city look.

De stad heeft heel boeiende muziekscene die gegroeid is uit de krakersbeweging en wars is van alle conformisme. Ook eerder grote namen als Godspeed You!Black Emperor en Silver Mount Zion tekenen niet voor grote labels en schuwen de machinaties van de grote muziekbusiness. Voor die groepen bood Montréal midden jaren 90 een ideale thuishaven wegens de lage huurprijzen (door de speculaties over een onafhankelijk Québec trokken veel Engelstalige bedrijven er weg, dat leidde tot leegstand). Heel wat muzikanten uit Toronto, Ottawa en Vancouver zochten hun toevlucht in de stad. Samen met de Engelstalige muzikanten die er al aan het werk waren, zorgden ze voor een boom in de muziekproductie van het nieuwe millennium.

The city is home to a highly stimulating music scene which has evolved out of the squatter’s culture, turning its back on every form of conformism. Even former great names such as Godspeed You!Black Emperor and Silver Mount Zion refuse to sign with the big labels and oppose the manipulative intervention of the big music business. For these groups, Montreal provided the ideal home base in the mid 90s as a result of low rental prices (many English-speaking companies left as a result of speculations over Quebec’s independence which led to low occupancy rates). A lot of musicians from Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver sought sanctuary in the city. Together with the English-speaking musicians who were already working there, they generated a veritable boom in the production of music in the new millennium.

Samen met Jan De Vroede van Etoiles Polaires vzw en collega muziekprogrammeur in Vooruit Koen Gisen, trok ik eind april naar Montréal om het nieuwe Etoiles Polaires festival voor te bereiden. De stad heeft een fantastische veelheid aan concertplekken, van gevestigde clubs tot bijkamertjes van café’s en lofts. We belandden o.m. in de zolderkamer van een anarchistische boekhandel om te luisteren naar een verbijsterend goede Alden Penner (bekend van Unicorns, een mytische band) en in een loft van La Brique, een verlaten pakhuis in een buitenwijk waar de jonge francofone scene experimenteert.

I left for Montreal at the end of April to prepare for the new Etoiles Polaires festival with Jan De Vroede from Etoiles Polaires asbl/vzw and fellow music programmer at Vooruit, Koen Gisen. The city has a fantastic multiplicity of concert venues from established clubs to annexes of cafés and lofts. We ended up, among others, in the attic of an anarchistic book shop to listen to an alarmingly good Alden Penner (known from the Unicorns, a mythical band) and in a loft of La Brique, an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city which is home to the experiments of the young francophone scene.

De meeste muzikanten, platenlabels en festivalorganisatoren ontmoetten we in de Gagibi, een artiestencafé in het noorden van de stad, het hartje van de anglofone muziekscene. Uit de gesprekken blijkt hoe verweven de parcours van muzikanten uit verschillende groepen zijn. Ze combineren vaak succesvolle rockbands met eigenzinnige, meer experimentele projecten. Iedere artiest heeft als het ware een spin-off van zijn eigen band.

We met the majority of the musicians, record labels and festival organizers in the Gagibi, an artist’s café in the north of the city, heart of the anglophone music scene. Discussions revealed how the musical landscape is composed of a veritable patchwork of different groups. It often combines successful rock bands with original, more experimental projects. Every artist has, as it were, a spin-off of his own band.

We praten al over mogelijke samenwerkingen tussen Montréalse en Vlaamse muzikanten. De meesten kennen Vooruit door het concert dat Silver Mt Zion er tijdens Almost Cinema in 2006 gaf. De plek spreekt tot hun verbeelding. Ook het concept van het Etoiles Polaires festival, een heel verscheiden programma maken met meer populaire bands naast experimentele muziek en nieuwe projecten, spreekt aan.

We already raised the topic of a potential collaboration between Montreal and Flemish musicians. Most people know Vooruit from the concert Silver Mt Zion played there during Almost Cinema in 2006. The location fuelled their imagination. The concept of the Etoiles Polaires festival, comprising a very diverse programme with more popular bands alongside experimental music and new projects also struck a resonant tone.

Aanvankelijk had het Etoiles Polaires festival de ambitie om ook op artiesten en bands van Toronto te focussen. Een kort bezoek aan de stad bracht bij dat ook daar een boeiende, zij het heel andere scene te ontdekken valt. Gesprekken met muzikanten en sleutelfiguren Eric Chenaux en Sandro Perri leerde ons echter dat er weinig samenhang is tussen de scene van Toronto en die van Montreal. Het doet ons voorlopig besluiten om de focus enkel op Montréal te leggen. Daar is al meer dan voldoende potentieel aanwezig. We hebben dan ook al een verlanglijst van muzikanten en projecten die te lang wordt voor één festival. Dat zowel de Algemene Vertegenwoordiging van Québec in Brussel als de Canadese Ambassade zich achter het festival scharen, geeft Etoiles Polaires en Vooruit wél de kans om een grote groep muzikanten naar Gent te halen.

The Etoiles Polaires festival originally had the ambition to focus on artists and bands from Toronto as well. A short visit to the city revealed that an equally dynamic albeit very different scene was thriving there. However, talks with musicians and key figures Eric Chenaux and Sandro Perri taught us that there was little coherence between the Toronto and Montreal scenes. We decided for the moment to focus exclusively on Montreal. There is already more than enough potential present there. In fact, our wish list of musicians and projects was already too long for one festival. The fact that both the General Delegation of Quebec in Brussels and the Canadian Embassy are supporting the festival gives Etoiles Polaires and Vooruit the chance to invite a large group of musicians to Ghent.
