Samen met het S.M.A.K. en 10 Days Off daagt Vooruit de zomer uit met een nieuw kunstzinnig evenement: Electrified. Beeldende kunst, geluidskunst en elektronische muziek zijn de voornaamste ingrediënten. Van 18 juli t/m 21 september 2008 loopt Electrified in en rond het S.M.A.K., met een gratis tentoonstelling met werk van Ronald Kuivila en Edwin van der Heide.

The S.M.A.K., 10 Days Off, and Vooruit present Electrified, a summer event mixing visual art, sound art and electronic music. From 18 June to 21 September you will be able to visit a free exhibition in the SMAK featuring work by Ronald Kuivila and Edwin van der Heide.

Deepblue is de naam van het kunstenaarstrio Heine R. Avdal, Christoph De Boeck en Yukiko Shinozaki. Vaak werken ze elk apart aan projecten, maar zo nu en dan slaan ze de handen in elkaar en komen ze naar buiten met een collectief stuk. De laatste keer dat ze samenwerkten was in 2003 met Closer. Die voorstelling ging in Vooruit in première en kende nadien een succesvolle internationale tournee. Nu presenteert het trio een nieuw stuk, dat ook in Vooruit in première gaat: You are here, van 22 t/m 24 mei 2008 te zien in onze Domzaal.

Deepblue is the name of the artist trio Heine R. Avdal, Christoph De Boeck and Yukiko Shinozaki. Although they often work on projects individually, every now and again they join forces to produce a collective work. The last time they worked together was in 2003 with Closer. The exhibition premièred in Vooruit before embarking on a successful international tour. Now the trio are presenting a new piece, which will also première in Vooruit: You are here, on show from 22 to 24 May in our Dom Hall.

Samen met het Festival van Vlaanderen en het Parijse Parc de la Villette ondersteunde Vooruit de productie Nachtschade van Victoria, een gewaagd project dat verschillende gerenommeerde kunstenaars/choreografen losliet op het gegeven ‘striptease’. Na een intense repetitieperiode ging Nachtschade op 28 september 2006 in première in onze Theaterzaal. Dat Eric De Volder, Caterina Sagna, Vera Mantero, Alain Platel, Johanne Saunier, Claudia Triozzi en Wim Vandekeybus met echte striptease-artiesten zouden werken, had een groot publiek en ook heel wat media brandend nieuwsgierig gemaakt.

Vooruit supported Victoria’s production, Nachtschade in 2006 together with the Festival of Flanders and the Parisian Parc de la Villette. This daring project consisted of letting a number of famous artists/choreographers loose on the phenomenon of the ‘strip tease’. After an intense rehearsal period, Nachtschade premièred in our Theatre Hall on 28 September 2006. The fact that Eric De Volder, Caterina Sagna, Vera Mantero, Alain Platel, Johanne Saunier, Claudia Triozzi and Wim Vandekeybus were to work with genuine strip tease artists succeeded in igniting the curiosity of a wide public and several sections of the media.

Wat blijft er na veertig jaar over van de idealen van mei 68? Is de verbeelding machteloos geworden? Is de politieke vrijheid verworven, maar staat de zekerheid van “auto, boulot, dodo” op de helling? Bestond de toekomst toen uit hoop en nu uit angst? Zijn de barricaden van toen vervangen door het sociaal-politieke middenveld van nu? Toestanden, kritisch forum binnen Vooruit, her-denkt mei 68 samen met de Universiteit Gent, Amsab-Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis, De Morgen, Stichting Gerrit Kreveld en de Stad Gent onder de noemer De Hete Lente: debatten, (live) muziek, foto’s, spandoeken en film van 12 t/m 15 mei 2008.

What’s left of the May 1968 ideology forty years on? What happened to the power of imagination? Have we traded the relative security of the rat race for political freedom? Is our future now made of fear instead of hope? Have the barricades been replaced by civil society? In association with Ghent University, the Amsab Institute for Social History, De Morgen, Kreveld Stichting and the city of Ghent, Toestanden critical platform in Vooruit organises De Hete Lente (Hot Spring) with debates, (live) music, photos, banners and film screenings from the 12th until the 15th of May 2008.

Vooruit engageert zich om deel te nemen aan het IBBT-onderzoek CUPID, voluit Cultural Profile and Information Database. In CUPID komen verschillende aspecten aan bod: hoe kan cultuur- en vrijetijdsinformatie zo optimaal mogelijk worden verzameld en beheerd; hoe kun je cultuur- en vrijetijdsinformatie best categoriseren; hoe kun je informatie doelgericht ontsluiten naar specifieke individuen/doelgroepen; welke interessante distributiemodellen en ontsluitingsmechanismen zijn er voor de cultuurparticipant. Informatie over CUPID werd beschikbaar gesteld op het Brokerage Event van IBBT op 7 mei 2008. Zie projectfiche.

Vooruit participates in the IBBT research project CUPID, which stands for Cultural Profile and Information Database. CUPID will address several issues: how can information about culture and leisure be gathered and managed optimally; how is this information best categorised; how is it best made available to specific individuals or target groups and which distribution models or mechanisms are interesting for the culture lover? Check the project leaflet of CUPID (that was presented on IBBT’s Brokerage Event on the 7th of May 2008).

In een wereld van steeds toenemende technologische complexiteit wordt er tegenwoordig veel aandacht besteed aan innovatieve interactietechnieken tussen mens en computer. Nieuwe computerinterfaces worden daardoor geschikter voor gebruik in verschillende contexten en door een bredere doorsnede van de bevolking. Het project Multi-Media Multi-touch Table (MuTable) dat Kunstencentrum Vooruit leidt, met steun van het ICT- onderzoekscentrum IBBT, wil multi-touchtechnologie ontwikkelen tot op een niveau waarop ze in openbare ruimtes zoals musea en bibliotheken kan worden gebruikt. In a world where technology seems to be getting ever more complex, innovative interaction techniques between man and computer are becoming increasingly popular. These new techniques make new computer interfaces more suitable for different environments and accessible to a wider audience. p(english). The Multi-Media Multi-touch Table (MuTable) project, conducted by Vooruit Arts Centre in association with ICT research centre IBBT, wants to develop multi-touch technology on a level that can be used in public places such as museums and libraries. Central to the MuTable are the multi-touch widgets that enable the user to almost physically manipulate digital media. The project was presented at IBBT’s Brokerage event on the 7th of May 2008. Vooruit stapt in 2008 opnieuw in enkele onderzoeksprojecten ondersteund door het ICT-onderzoeksinstituut IBBT. Eén van die projecten heet DEUS, het letterwoord voor Deployment and Easy Use of Wireless Services. Op het IBBT Brokerage Event op 7 mei 2008 werd informatie over dat project ter beschikking gesteld. In 2008, Vooruit will take part in several research projects in association with the IBBT research institute. Zaterdag zijn in Vooruit vier goden van de elektronische muziek neergestreken: Lucio Capece, Mika Vainio, Kevin Drumm en Axel Dörner. Ze komen oorspronkelijk uit verschillende continenten, maar hebben elkaar in Berlijn – nog steeds het mekka voor veel muzikanten wegens goedkope huur en veel speelplekken – ontmoet. Ze werken hier voor het eerst samen. Na hun concert in de Domzaal op 8 mei 2008 in co-productie met (K-RAA-K)³ (een double bill met Heleen Van Haegenborgh & Esther Venrooy) trekken ze voor concerten naar Parijs, Grenoble, Strasbourg en Venetië.

Last Saturday four gods of electronic music landed in Vooruit: Lucio Capece, Mika Vainio, Kevin Drumm and Axel Dörner. Although originally hailing from four different continents, they met while living in Berlin – still a Mecca for musicians thanks to the low rent and its many concert venues. They will be working together for the first time here. After their gig in the Domzaal on the 8th of May 2008 in co-production with (K-RAA-K)³ – a double bill with Heleen Van Haegenborgh & Esther Venrooy – they will go on to play gigs in Paris, Grenoble, Strasbourg and Venice.

Vooruit opent opnieuw zijn deuren voor Muziekclub Democrazy. De gezamenlijke concertreeks die in 2005 werd opgestart onder de noemer Club Midi, krijgt vanaf het najaar 2008 een vervolg. Club Midi staat voor een brede reeks van muziekavonden: van smerige rock and roll tot alternatieve pop, intieme folk en singer-songwriters, projecten rond elektronica en dansmuziek en specifieke thema-avonden (reggae, soul, hiphop, hardcore, drum and bass),...

Vooruit is again opening its doors for Muziekclub Democrazy. The series of concerts which began in 2005 under the umbrella of Club Midi will be continued in the spring of 2008. Club Midi comprises a wide spectrum of musical evenings: from dirty rock and roll to alternative pop, intimate folk and singer-songwriters, projects on electronics and dance music and specific theme evenings (reggae, soul, hip hop, hardcore, drum and bass),...

Op 13 oktober 2003 lanceerde Vooruit Uitgelezen, een “levend boekenprogramma voor en door lezers”. De inzet was de liefde voor boeken (en lezen) delen op een kritische, bevlogen manier. Het klikte meteen, zowel met de lezers in het panel als met het publiek. Met enig schaven werd Uitgelezen een publiek succes. Intussen zijn we 5 jaar en 37 Gentse edities verder, werd de boekenbijlage van De Morgen omgedoopt tot… Uitgelezen en trok Uitgelezen al 33 keer “op reis” naar Brussel, Aalst, Leuven, Antwerpen, Sint-Niklaas en Oostende. Hoog tijd dus voor een feesteditie!

Vooruit launched Uitgelezen, the “lively book programme made for and by readers” on 13 October 2003. The initial motivation was to share a love of books (and reading) in a critical, animated context. Things clicked from the beginning, both with readers on the panel and the wider public. With a few adjustments, Uitgelezen became a public success. 5 years and 37 Ghent editions later, the book supplement of the newspaper De Morgen was re-baptized “Uitgelezen” and the publication has been “on tour” some 33 times to Brussels, Aalst, Leuven, Antwerp, St Niklaas and Ostend. High time, in other words, for a festive edition!
