Jazz: als je de a wat laat slepen klinkt het een beetje zoals het is – wat vuil en toch bekoorlijk. Wij aanzien jazz eerder als een vrijplaats voor creatieve muziek dan als een goed gedefinieerde muziekvorm. Henry Threadgill, met Zooid in Vooruit in november 08, vertelde ooit aan een journalist dat hij geen jazzcomponist is: “I just compose music”.
Jazz: if you let the ‘a’ drag on a bit, it sounds a little bit like it is – somewhat dirty and yet the epitome of grace. We regard jazz more as a free space for creative music than as a well-defined musical form. Threadgill is the kind of composer/musician who exposes the sheer breadth of the signifier, ‘jazz’. Jazz at a stretch, if you will. We have a considerable amount in store this coming season 0809: living legend Dave Douglas, the amazing voice of Sidsel Endresen, the adventurous Aka Moon, big band Flat Earth Society, the Swedish Paavo and the latest project by Tim Berne and Hank Roberts: Buffalo Collision.

Beyond slaat op het grensgebied. Muzikanten die jazz wel als een inspiratiebron noteren, maar daar niet noodzakelijkerwijs iets mee aanvangen op het podium. Jóhann Jóhannsson is zo iemand; jazz in de platenrekken maar niet in zijn muziek. De muzikanten van Humcrush zitten ook in dat vaarwater. Bij hen is improvisatie het cement. Ook bij 2Foot Yard, het singersong trio van Carla Kihlstedt.
Beyond plays with the boundaries. Musicians who count jazz as a source of inspiration but who do not necessarily do anything with it on stage. Jóhann Jóhannsson is such a musician: jazz in his record collection but not in his music. The musicians from Humcrush also share that space. Improvisation is the mortar for 2Foot Yard, Carla Kihlstedt’s singersong trio.
