Op 8 februari stelt het muziekcollectief Mâäk’s Spirit (van o.a. Eric Thielemans en Jeroen Van Herzeele) zijn nieuwe CD Stroke voor in Vooruit, een samenwerking met Zuid-Afrikaanse spoken word artiesten. Het was op aansturen van Vooruit dat Mâäk’s Spirit een samenwerking met die artiesten aanging: in 2004 gaf Vooruit n.a.v. de 10de verjaardag van het opheffen van de Apartheid de opdracht aan Mâäk’s Spirit om een productie te maken met Zuid-Afrikanen. Het ensemble mikte op een minder voor de hand liggende combinatie en koos voor spoken word performers.

On the 8th of February, music collective “Mâäk’s Spirit””:http://maaksspirit.be/ (including Eric Thielemans and Jeroen Van Herzeele, among others) will present its new album Stroke, a collaboration with African spoken word artists, in Vooruit. The project was instigated by Vooruit: at the tenth anniversary of the end of Apartheid in 2004, Vooruit commissioned Mâäk’s Spirit to work with South African artists. The band opted for a less obvious collaboration and decided to work with spoken word performers.

Mâäk’s drummer Eric Thielemans en trompettist Laurent Blondiau maakten in Johannesburg kennis met maatschappijkritische dichters en performers, dankzij Desiree Markgraaff van The Bomb (het productiehuis van de ophefmakende televisieserie Yizo Yizo, die in Vooruit is vertoond). De jonge spoken word artiesten Kgafela oa Magogodi en Samantha Cube waren enthousiast om met de Belgische muzikanten samen te werken. Er werden daarop sessies georganiseerd waarbij de twee muzikanten met de poëten improviseerden—een perfect match.

In Johannesburg, drummer Eric Thielemans and trumpet player Laurent Blondiau met poets and performers criticical of South African society with the help of Desiree Markgraaff from the production company The Bomb, known for uncompromising television series Yizo Yizo which was shown at Vooruit. Young spoken word performers Kgafela oa Magogodi and Samantha Cube enthusiastically took up the challenge of working with the Belgian musicians. Then two sessions were organised at which the musicians improvised with the poets, and it proved to be a perfect match.

Een maand later stonden de andere Mâäk’s Spirit leden in Johannesburg om te repeteren en enkele concerten te geven. In oktober 2004 organiseerde Vooruit een residentieweek voor de artiesten en werd het project in Vooruit en in het Zuiderpershuis voorgesteld.

A month later, the other members of Mâäk’s Spirit arrived in Johannesburg to rehearse and perform a few live shows. In October 2004, Vooruit organised a resident week for the artists and the project was presented at Vooruit and the Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp.

De twee Zuid-Afrikanen bleken sterke performers. Kgafela is een jonge academicus die verbonden is aan de School of Dramatic art. Een Zuid-Afrikaanse criticus omschreef hem als volgt: “Reading … listening to Kgafela oa Magogodi’s poetry & song is a shattering experience. His linguistic chisels go far beyond causing blisters in the eardrums of society. They are like a shattered mirror, with each piece of glass throwing at you a reflection, an image of its own. Trying to put the images together into one coherent picture is as haunting as it is daunting, as strangely delightful as it is bizare. Each line throws a defiant question at you & in so doing forces you to search deeper into the cultural-political dynamics of South Africa as well as the complexities of the country’s individual souls. His art is not something that you can fix a label on without going drastically wrong. Which is to say that he is that rare thing which appreciates the essence of artistry, that daring adventure into a creative space of one’s own.”

The two South Africans proved to be great performers. Kgafela is a young academic, teaching at the School of Dramatic Art. Ook de teksten van Samantha 7 beschrijven op een treffende manier de Zuid-Afrikaanse samenleving. Als jonge zwarte vrouw weet zijn als geen ander een stem te geven aan de discriminatie en het harde leven in de Zuid Afrikaanse townships. Maak’s Spirit componeerde er heel gevoelige muziek bij, die de inhoud van de teksten verklankt.

In her monologues, Samanta7 also poignantly describes South African society. As a young black woman, she describes discrimination and the grittiness of life in the South African townships like no other. Mâäk’s spirit composed sensitive music that intensifies the meaning of the lyrics.

Eind 2007 besliste de groep om de muziek van deze productie op cd te zetten. Die CD is net van de persen gerold. Begin febrauri volgen releaseconcerten in Brussel, Antwerpen, Amsterdam en Gent. Op 8 februari krijgt dit fantastische project zijn langverwachte tweede adem in Vooruit. In late 2007 the band decided to record the music of the project and the album has just been released. In February there will be release concerts in Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Ghent.
