Vooruit-exe

December 06 stond in het teken van Istanbul Ekspres, een festival met focus op Turkse muzikanten. Het was een mooie gelegenheid om vanuit Fricties, platform voor mediakunst in Vooruit, Basak Senova uit te nodigen, oprichtster van het platform Nomad en freelance curator gebaseerd in Istanbul. In december 07 staan we klaar voor een invasie van Finse muzikanten met de tweede editie van Etoiles Polaires. Ook dit keer lag er een mooie kans om samen te werken met een jong en opmerkelijk curator uit de mediakunst.

In December 06 we welcomed Istanbul Ekspres, a festival focusing on Turkish musicians. It was a great opportunity for the Media Arts platform in Vooruit to invite Basek Senova, founder of the Nomad platform and freelance curator based in Istanbul. In December 07, Vooruit will be invaded by Finnish musicians during the second edition of Etoiles Polaires. We thought this was another great opportunity to work with a young and remarkable media arts curator.

Juha Huuskonen in de bezieler van Pixelache, een festival en netwerk voor electronische kunst en subcultuur. Eerder dit jaar in april trok ik naar Finland om de jaarlijkse Pixelache bijeenkomst bij te wonen, tegenwoordig gehuisvest in Kiasma, het museum voor hedendaagse kunst in Helsinki, met nachtelijke uitlopers in (beruchte) nachtclubs. Het bleek een kleinschalig maar bruisend festival bol van ontmoeting en discussie tussen artiesten, critici en toeschouwers, in Finse stijl afgerond met een gezamelijk saunabezoek (voor de liefhebbers). In tegenstelling tot vorig jaar ligt de focus dit jaar niet exclusief op een tentoonstelling. Aangezien de roots van Pixelache sterk verwant zijn met de sterke vj-cultuur in Helsinki kozen we voor een veel symbiotischer aanpak met het muziekprogramma. Drie visuele kunstenaars gaan in dialoog met drie muzikale projecten uit het programma (Maippi, Samuli Alapuranen en Marita Liulia). In een screening tonen we werk van internationale mediakunstenaars die gelinkt zijn aan Pixelache (oa Mike Nourse, Geert Mul, Max Payne en JODI). In de tentoonstelling richten we de spots op Terike Haapoja en Juha Valkeapaa. En we nodigen Placard uit voor een driedaags headphonefestival in het café.

Juha Huuskonen is the founder of Pixelache, a festival and network for electronic art and subcultures. Earlier this year, I attended the annual Pixelache gathering in Finland. It was held in Kiasma, the Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art, with reverberations in infamous nightclubs in the evenings. It proved to be a small-scale but vibrant festival where artists, critics and the public met and debated, topped off in true Finnish style with a sauna visit (for the fans). Contrary to last year, this time the focus won’t solely lie on an exhibition. Seeing that Pixelache’s roots are firmly set in Helsinki’s VJ culture, we opted for a programme more symbiotic with the concerts. Three visual artists will enter into a dialogue with three music projects on the programme (Maippi Ketola, Samuli Alapuranen and Marita Liulia). We’ll be showing work by international media artists connected to the Pixelache network (Mike Nourse, Geert Mul, Max Payne, Jodi, etc.) in the Pixelache screening. In the exhibition you’ll be able to see work by Terike Haapoja and Juha Valkeaapa, while also inviting Placard for a three-day headphone festival in the Café.
