Europe Jazz Network @ Vooruit
Van donderdag 6 tot zondag 9 september bezochten ongeveer 100 buitenlandse gasten Brugge en Gent in het kader van de Europe Jazz Network General Assembly en het showcase festival Flemish Jazz Meeting.
From Thursday the 6th until Sunday the 9th of September, about one hundred guests from all over the world visited Bruges and Ghent for the Europe Jazz Network General Assembly and the Flemish Jazz Meeting showcase festival.
Europe Jazz Network is een Europees netwerk van festivals, clubs en muziek- informatiecentra. Het Netwerk (waarvan Vooruit, Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen en Motives festival de Vlaamse leden zijn) vergadert jaarlijks in een Europese stad (in het verleden kwamen Budapest, Istanbul en Helsinki aan de beurt). Op de vergaderingen topics besproken die het jazzbeleid aanbelangen. Tijdens de General Assembly waren twee discussies gepland, één over jazzbeleid en één over de relatie tussen het artistiek programma en externe context.
The Europe Jazz Network is a European network of festivals, clubs and music information centres. The Network (of which Vooruit, Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen and Motives festival are the Flemish members) holds a General Assembly in a different European city every year (in the past it was held in Budapest, Istanbul and Helsinki). At these meetings, topics concerning jazz policy are discussed. This year, two debates were planned, one on jazz policy and one on the relationship between the artistic programme and external context.
De discussie over jazzbeleid werd gevoerd door Nod Knowless (directeur Bath Festivals-UK), Annamaija Saarela (UMO jazz orchestra-FIN), Peter Schulte (Jazz Bremen –DUI), Gert Keunen ( Briskey –BE), Jos Van Rillaer (Administrateur-generaal Agentschap Kunsten en Erfgoed) en Simon Korteweg (maker van het rapport over het jazzbeleid in Vlaanderen – download hier). De deelnemers aan het debat werden geconfronteerd met en aantal stellingen over de subsidiëring van muzikanten en podia, het vastleggen van een norm voor de subsidiëring van jazz, het statuut van de jazzmuzikant en het jazz-onderwijs in Vlaanderen.
Participants in the jazz policy debate were Nod Knowles (Chief Executive of Bath Festivals, UK), Annamaija Saarela (UMO jazz orchestra, FIN), Peter Schulte (Jazz Bremen, GER), Gert Keunen (Briskey, BE), Jos Van Rillaer (Administrator General of the Belgian Agency for the Arts and Heritage) and Simon Korteweg (writer of the report on jazz policy in Flanders – download here). The participants were confronted with a number of statements about the subsidisation of musicians and concert venues, the setting of a norm for the subsidisation of jazz, the statute of jazz musicians and jazz education in Belgium.
Een tweede debat was meer een vraaggesprek was tussen moderator Werner Trio en een nieuwe groep jazzprogrammeurs: Xavier Lemettre (Banlieues Bleues festival-FR), Ildiko Nagy (Mediawave-HK), John Cumming (London Jazz Festival –UK), Anne Erm (Jazzkaar-EST). In dit vraagsprek werd de relatie tussen de artistieke programmering, het beschikbare budget, ticketinkomsten, sponsorrelaties, nieuw publiek, artistieke ontwikkelingen,…. aangekaart. Daarnaast waren er sessies van EJN leden over de toekomst van het Netwerk en de relatie tot de Europese Gemeenschap.
The second debate was more like a Q&A between the moderator, Werner Trio, and a new group of jazz programmers: Xavier Lemettre (Banlieues Bleues festival – FR), Ildiko Nagy (Mediawave – HK), John Cumming (London Jazz Festival – UK), Anne Erm (Jazzkaar – EST). Here, the relationship between programming, the budget available, ticket incomes, sponsor relationships, a new audience, artistic developments, etc. were discussed. Apart from that, there were sessions by EJN members talking about the future of the Network and the relationship with the EU.
Even belangrijk als het vergaderen en debatteren waren de showcases van Vlaamse jazzmuzikanten. Een groep van 60 experten (voornamelijk jazzorganisatoren en journalisten) stelde een lijst van 15 ensembles samen die aan de buiten- en binnenlandse gasten werden voorgesteld. In Vooruit traden Jef Neve trio, het VVG trio (met special guest Jozef Dumoulin), Narcissus Quartet, Mäâk’s Spirit en The Flat Earth Society op. Een diverse waaier jazz die door de buitenlandse gasten goed gesmaakt werd. Voor hen die voor het eerst voet in Vooruit zetten, waren ook de lovende reactie op de pracht van het gebouw niet uit de lucht.
Another element that was just as important as the debates and the meetings were the showcases by Flemish jazz musicians. A group of 60 experts (mainly organisers of jazz events and journalists) set up a list of 15 ensembles that were introduced to national and international guests. At Vooruit, Jef Neve trio, the VVG trio (feat. special guest Jozef Dumoulin), Narcissus Quartet, Mäâk’s Spirit and The Flat Earth Society took the stage. A diverse selection which was much to the taste of the international audience. First-time visitors to the Vooruit were also impressed by the grandeur of the building.
De organisatie van het Europe Jazz Network en The Flemish Jazz Meeting was in handen van De Werf, Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen, Jazzlabseries en Vooruit, met steun van de Stad Gent, de Stad Brugge, Concertgebouw en Bijloke Muziekcentrum.
