Afgelopen zaterdag vierde Kunstencentrum Vooruit zijn 25ste verjaardag met een groot feest. 2.500 bezoekers en héél wat artiesten vulden alle zalen, studio’s en kleine lokalen van Vooruit en lieten het gebouw gonzen en schitteren van de entree tot in de nok. Nagenieten kan dankzij de 25 herinneringen van theatermaker Arne Sierens, het (groeiend) fotoverslag en perscitaten op de Vooruitsite en deze videomontage van het vuurwerkspektakel – de kroon op een geslaagd feest.

Hartelijk dank aan alle artiesten, organisaties en relaties die het feest mee op touw zetten. Dank ook voor jullie talrijke aanwezigheid en warme reacties.

Last Saturday Vooruit Arts Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary with a big birthday bash. Several artists and 2500 visitors filled the halls, studios and rooms of Vooruit and let the building buzz and sparkle from the entrance to the top. Exact 25 jaar geleden, op vrijdag 17 september 1982, werden de deuren van het Feestlokaal van Vooruit feestelijk heropend door de ploeg die Kunstencentrum Vooruit zou uitbouwen. Een driedaags openingsweekend lokte toen een massa nieuwsgierige artiesten en feestvierders. Arne Sierens gaf present met zijn acteurscollectief De Sluipende Armoede; Paul Ambach aka Boogie Boy trad op; Roland en Robbe De Hert waren van de partij; ... Zo zag de uitnodiging eruit:

On Friday the 17th of September 1982, the doors of the Vooruit halls were reopened with a festive opening by the team that would develop Vooruit Arts Centre. The three-day opening weekend attracted hordes of curious artists and party animals. Arne Sierens took the stage with his theatre company De Sluipende Armoede, Paul Ambach aka Boogieboy gave a concert; Roland and Robbe De Hert were present….This is what the invitation looked like:

Kunstencentrum Vooruit wordt in september 25; het gebouw staat er 94 jaar. De pioniers van het kunstencentrum durven elkaar ondertussen al eens tegen te spreken in hun anekdotes. En véél getuigen die nog kunnen vertellen over Vooruits grandioos verleden als socialistisch volkshuis, zijn er niet meer. In het kader van zijn 25-jarig bestaan richtte Vooruit daarom de camera op enkele getuigen van het eerste uur.

Vooruit Arts Centre celebrates its 25th birthday in September; the building has been standing for 94 years. By now the anecdotes told by the pioneers of the Arts Centre sometimes contradict each other. And there aren’t that many first-hand witnesses left of Vooruit’s glory days as a socialist community centre. That’s why Vooruit has recorded testimonies of people who’ve been involved with Vooruit from the beginning.

Van donderdag 6 tot zondag 9 september bezochten ongeveer 100 buitenlandse gasten Brugge en Gent in het kader van de Europe Jazz Network General Assembly en het showcase festival Flemish Jazz Meeting.

From Thursday the 6th until Sunday the 9th of September, about one hundred guests from all over the world visited Bruges and Ghent for the Europe Jazz Network General Assembly and the Flemish Jazz Meeting showcase festival.

Europe Jazz Network is een Europees netwerk van festivals, clubs en muziek- informatiecentra. Het Netwerk (waarvan Vooruit, Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen en Motives festival de Vlaamse leden zijn) vergadert jaarlijks in een Europese stad (in het verleden kwamen Budapest, Istanbul en Helsinki aan de beurt). Op de vergaderingen topics besproken die het jazzbeleid aanbelangen. Tijdens de General Assembly waren twee discussies gepland, één over jazzbeleid en één over de relatie tussen het artistiek programma en externe context.

The Europe Jazz Network is a European network of festivals, clubs and music information centres. The Network (of which Vooruit, Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen and Motives festival are the Flemish members) holds a General Assembly in a different European city every year (in the past it was held in Budapest, Istanbul and Helsinki). At these meetings, topics concerning jazz policy are discussed. This year, two debates were planned, one on jazz policy and one on the relationship between the artistic programme and external context.

Noem het gerust het mekka van de mediakunst. Ars Electronica is het grootste en oudste festival voor kunst en technologie in Europa. Naast de traditionele tentoonstelling in het OKCentrum, is er dit jaar een heuse expostraat te bezichtigen.

It’s safe to say that Ars Electronica is the Mecca of Media Arts. Ars Electronica is the biggest and oldest festival for art and technology in Europe. Apart from the traditional exhibition in the Ars Electronica Centre, this year, there was also an exhibition street.

Vooruit wil een motor zijn van samenwerking, binnen en buiten het artistieke veld, in de stad waarin we ons bevinden en in het landschap waarbinnen we werken. Omgaan met / zorg dragen voor diversiteit maken integraal deel uit van dat maatschappelijk engagement. In een zgn. instapdiversiteitsplan (ingediend bij de overlegstructuur over socio-economische streekontwikkeling SERR in juni 2007) omschrijft Vooruit zijn visie op diversiteit en evalueert de organisatie eerder genomen (losse) initiatieven. Het plan vormt de basis voor verdere actieplannen. Een werkgroep diversiteit (tevens de denktank achter het instapdiversiteitsplan) gaat in Vooruit aan de slag met alle vragen rond het thema diversiteit.

Vooruit wants to promote cooperation in the artistic world and outside of it, in the city where we are located and in the landscape where we work. Dealing with diversity in a positive way is a quintessential part of our social awareness. In what is called an instapsdiversiteitsplan in Dutch (a plan to promote diversity), which was handed to the SERR (regional board for socio-economic development) in June 2007, Vooruit described its view on diversity and evaluated initiatives taken in the past. A special diversity commission (which also functioned as the think tank for the instapsdiversiteitsplan) will try to find answers to all sorts of questions concerning diversity.

Almost Cinema, een jaarlijks evenement van Vooruit en Filmfestival Gent, biedt een boeiende kijk op de flinterdunne scheiding tussen film, mediakunst, theater en muziek. Het volledig programma wordt toegelicht op de Vooruitsite.

Almost Cinema, an annual event organised by Vooruit and the Film Festival Ghent, will be offering a unique view on the paper-thin line between film, media art, drama and music. You can find more information about the programme on the Vooruit website.

De zomer is voorbij. Het culturele seizoen trekt zich op gang. Al lag het seizoen in Vooruit nooit écht stil. We ontvingen de jonge choreografen/dansers Tarek Halaby en Sujata Goel. Dolores Bouckaert was in alle stilte in één van onze studio’s aan het werk en Ontroerend Goed, nog maar net terug van hun overwinningstocht in het verre Edinburg (Fringe Festival), palmde een andere studio in. Maar nu is het bijna herfst, en maken enkele bekende en minder bekende namen zich op voor hun eindspurt richting première. In pole position staat Crew. Summer is gone. But the cultural season is only just getting started, and in Vooruit, it never stopped. Over the summer, we welcomed young choreographers / dancers Tarek Halaby and Sujata Goel. Dolores Bouckaert worked in one of our studios while Ontroerend Goed, only just back from their victory march in faraway Edinburgh (Fringe Festival), occupied another studio.
