the game is up!
In Shakespeare’s Cymbeline lazen we de regel “the game is up!” (act III, scene III) en daarmee wordt bedoeld “het spel gaat beginnen!”. Welaan dan! Met ‘the game is up!, het Vooruit-festival dat op 7 februari 2007 uit zijn startblokken schiet, exploreren we alle aspecten van het spel. Codes en regels moeten er spelenderwijs aan geloven. Daar zijn samen met Vooruit heel wat artiesten verantwoordelijk voor: Stelarc (AU), Velma (CH), Crew (BE), The Yes Men (US), Cuqui Jerez (ES), Ivana Müller (HR/NL), Heine R. Avdal (NO/BE), Golan Levin & Jaap Blonk (US/NL), Monolake (DE) en vele anderen.
In Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, we came across the verse “the game is up!” (act III, scene III), meaning: the play/game is about to start. And this verse seemed to be the perfect title for a festival focusing on the artists’ wilful challenge to the concept of the game, its codes and its rules. From 7th until 16th February, the Vooruit Arts centre has invited a selection of international artists from various disciplines who play games, show us the codes (hidden or not), impose rules (some of them absurd) on themselves, or breach or parody them.
Centraal in het festival staan dus artiesten die het spel ernstig nemen, die codes en regels bevragen. Maar er is meer. Heel wat van de (internationale) projecten in ‘the game is up’ werken met locale vrijwilligers. Zo zochten we een ‘koor’ voor de voorstelling Velma Superstar, 35 mensen stelden zich graag kandidaat! Voor een live reenactment van Pole Position, het gekende videogame uit de jaren tachtig dat de Zwitserse kunstenaar Guillaume Reymond op poten zet, zochten we maar liefst 50 mensen. Zij geven hun zondagsrust tijdens het festival op om in de theaterzaal met ons dit autorace-spel nieuw leven in te blazen. Voor een performance in de stad vonden we samen met de Duitse kunstenaar Aram Bartholl een vijftiental mensen bereid om met hun avatar-naam boven het hoofd de straten onveilig willen maken. Voor de performance van de Spaanse choreografe Cuqui Jerez spannen 12 ‘toeschouwers’ met haar samen. En om The Kansas City Shuffle van danser/choreograaf Sandy Williams tot een goed einde te brengen zoeken we (wellicht tot de laatste dag van het festival) meer dan vijftig vrijwilligers… De zoektocht naar bereidwillige medewerkers voor de meeste van deze projecten werd onlangs met veel succes afgesloten. Het repetitieproces neemt zijn aanvang en de premièrekoorts stijgt! Tijdens het festival tonen we ook al deze processen die voorafgingen, in een grote videowand. Zo willen we iedereen een blik in de keuken bieden. Aanvankelijk zullen vele van de tv-schermen nog ‘ruis’ geven, maar elk voltooid project krijgt een documentaire neerslag in de tentoonstelling.
