HOMO FUTURIS festival, a joint venture with the Flanders UNESCO Centre
De link tussen kunst en wetenschap is één van de rode draden in de programmering van Vooruit. Onder de noemer Kunst & Wetenschap worden verschillende activiteiten opgezet, o.m. het Homo Futuris festival in september 2006. Zie www.kunstenwetenschap.be.

Tom Bonte: “Kunst & Wetenschap is een laboratorium dat de wereld van de wetenschap binnenhaalt in een kunstencentrum. Dat gebeurt met lezingen, debatten, samenwerkingen tussen wetenschappers en kunstenaars, studiereizen, digitale rariteitenkabinetten en natuurlijk met de Commissie ter Bevordering en Bevraging van de Relatie tussen Kunst en Wetenschap. Het project doet meer vragen rijzen dan het antwoorden biedt. Het is in het beste geval destabiliserend bedoeld en in die zin eerder een (dubbelzinnig) artistiek project dan een naar eindconclusies strevend wetenschappelijk project.”
HOMO FUTURIS festival, van 27 t/m 30 september in Vooruit, is een samenwerking met UNESCO Centrum Vlaanderen, een lokale vereniging die zich toelegt op de verspreiding van het gedachtegoed van UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). Voor UCV is Homo Futuris niet enkel een kort festival maar ook de titel van een langlopend project over de invloed van wetenschap en technologie op het leven van morgen. Zie www.homofuturis.be.
UNESCO Centrum Vlaanderen en Vooruit hebben een uiteenlopende missie. “UCV vindt aansluiting bij de wetenschappelijke wereld, investeert in wetenschappelijk onderzoek en sensibilisering. Vooruit is een werk- en vertoningsplek voor kunstenaars, investeert in artistiek onderzoek. HOMO FUTURIS festival werd een gezamenlijk parcours: één groot debat, één geheel met confronterende tegenstellingen. Het publiek wordt uitgenodigd om positie in te nemen”, zegt Tom Bonte – programmator podium in Vooruit.
Tom Bonte: ‘Art & Science is a laboratory that brings the world of science into an arts centre. This takes the form of talks, debates, joint ventures involving scientists and artists, study trips, digital curio collections and of course the Commission for the Advancement of and Enquiry into Relations between Art and Science. The project raises more questions than answers. Its intention is, when it succeeds, to have a destabilising effect and in this sense is an (ambiguous) artistic project rather than a scientific project pursuing final conclusions.’
The Homo Futuris festival, from 27 to 30 September in the Vooruit, is a joint venture with the Flanders UNESCO Centre, a local association that concentrates on disseminating UNESCO ideas. For this group, Homo Futuris is not only a short festival but also the title of a long-term project that looks at the influence of science and technology on life in the future. The Flanders UNESCO Centre and the Vooruit have differing missions. ‘UCV is associated with the scientific world, and invests in scientific research and awareness. The Vooruit is a place of work and performance for artists, and invests in artistic research. The Homo Futuris festival was a collective venture: one major debate, one entity comprising confrontational contrasts. The public was invited to take up a position,’ says Tom Bonte, the performing arts programmer at the Vooruit.
