Superfast internet thanks to BELNET
Vooruit sloot een akkoord met de overheidsinstelling BELNET, die internettoegang met zeer hoge bandbreedte levert aan Belgische onderwijsinstellingen, onderzoekscentra en overheidsdiensten. Op die manier krijgt Vooruit toegang tot Internet2, het supersnelle internet. “
Vooruit has come to an arrangement with BELNET, a government organisation that provides internet access with a very large bandwidth to Belgian educational institutions, research centres and government departments. This gives the Vooruit access to Internet2, the superfast internet.
Dat stelt ons in staat om heel vlug gegevens uit te wisselen. Theoretisch is het mogelijk om snelheden van 622 miljoen bits per seconde te halen. Een cd-rom doorsturen kan in pakweg 8 seconden”, zegt Wouter Vermeylen, verantwoordelijk voor gebouwbeheer in Vooruit.
De aansluiting op het BELNET netwerk, dat normaliter voorbehouden is voor wetenschappelijke en onderzoeksinstellingen, betekent een erkenning voor de innovatieve voortrekkersrol die het digitaliseringsproject van Vooruit speelt in de kunstensector.
‘This enables us to exchange information at extremely high speed. Theoretically it is possible to achieve speeds of 622 million bits per second. To give an example, one could send the contents of a CD ROM in about 8 seconds,’ according to Wouter Vermeylen, responsible for managing the Vooruit building.
The connection to the BELNET network, which is normally reserved for scientific and research establishments, is an acknowledgement of the innovative pioneering role the Vooruit’s digitalisation project plays in the arts sector.
